Dark and complex

My interest in police dramas has waned considerably in recent years as law enforcement grows more and more militarized and unaccountable, but it seems like European programs are less likely to uncritically glorify cops. This series focuses on a single cold case and the misfit police officers tasked with solving it. Gritty and dark, the series instantly reminded me of Nordic Noir. And sure enough, it's based on a series of Danish novels, only relocated to Scotland. The prickly Carl Morck is--like Hugh Laurie's Dr. House--a genius asshole, but thankfully the show keeps him from becoming too aggressively awful as a human being. The supporting characters are also appealing and have a nice amount of depth to them. While this season works well as a singular self-contained story, I'm happy to see it has been renewed by Netflix.
