All the terrible politics of the original 90s movie with a shiny new coat of CGI
You know how when you watch an old movie, there's usually a lot of things that make you go "eugh, that didn't age well..."? This movie looked back at the original and just decided to double down on everything.
Every other animal is satisfied with the current system where they're often brutally murdered, because it's the circle of life or some BS, and nobody questions that.
At the end of the movie, Mufasa rallies all the other animals to his side against the Big Bad Evil Guy, and they listen, because... I'm not sure why, exactly? He's like "it's true that we will also kill and eat some of you on a regular basis, but that guy will do it in like a rude way."
Somebody decided that the movie's BBEG should constantly yell that he owns "everything the light touches", which, if you'll recall, is what Mufasa goes on to teach Simba when he's born? So "imperialism is fine as long as I'm the one doing it", I guess, is the lesson here?
Right at the end they do one of those things where like, he tries to dissolve the hierarchy and all the other animals go "no, you are the true king, we want you to rule us" and he just goes "oh ok". This is some great dialectical support of hierarchical systems right here, great job folks...
In this movie, the hyenas seem to be fully integrated into animal society. So at some point after Mufasa takes over, he institutes apartheid I guess? Is this something they explain in one of the old direct-to-video sequels I didn't watch?
The ol' Disney Special... If I recall correctly, the only animals in the movie we never see talk are one civet and a group of gazelles. Coincidentally, although it happened off-screen, those are also the only animals in the movie that we can safely assume were surely eaten. It's true they joke a lot about eating Timone, Pumba, and Zazu, but we the audience already know that won't happen, so it's safe to do that.
The one good thing this movie did, correctly, was to make the villains white. They literally are, they're white lions. Maybe that was supposed to be a dig at Kimba or something but it's certainly appropriate lol.
