A Serbian Film - Review

This movie was an edgy reddit post disguised as a full-length art film. While the bit of social commentary relating to sexual exploitation in media and the ways in which we perceive it was an interesting topic, the movie didn't do much to address it beyond occasional nods in its direction. The movie tries to take a shot at the culture around pornography, but loses sight of that with its empty plot. The shocking points that draw so much attention to this movie felt like they were trying to accomplish some kind of deep satire of our consumerist demand for the extreme, but they ended up just being annoying. The film-maker was just like "society claims to be against ___, yet demands it to happen" and just leaves it there without any kind of analysis, subversion, or really anything of substance. Beyond those problems, the whole gorey violence part that seems to be a big draw to this movie is just so comically weird to the point where it barely holds any weight. It's so awkward how the film is trying to make points about sexual exploitation by means of WWE-style jump cuts. You'd think that as the movie progressed, the situations would become more impactful, but they really just got more annoying. I think it's weird that so many positive reviews of this movie are people calling themselves psychos for enjoying the gore and the pushing of boundaries. If anything, I'd say that those people are the exact ones that this movie roughly attempted to critique.
