Notes of Ancient Sichuan

Sanxingdui is radically different with yellow river culture. Its bronze technology probably was brought from Zhongyuan, since some Zun were imported from Zhongyuan and were made locally without keeping fine details. High status images were probably made for ritual sacrifice because there is no human remains in the pits. Angular features and downward gaze give superior and supernatural look. Enlarged eyes make these images powerful.

Zhongyuan used Vessels for food and wine, while Yangzi and Sanxingdui used vessels for offerings. Gold was rarely used in bronze era. However, there are several objects have gold foil made as masks.

There are some objects I found interesting. Some heads have a pigtail. A bird with human head. Two muscular legs wearing a skirt having feet step on birds.

Objects from Zhuwajie might imply that even though bronze were imported, local elite didn't participant elaborate ancestral cult by Shang and Zhou. Bronze have local use in Sichuan.

There are erotic images on bricks of tombs in Western Han...

Sanxingdui will remain as a mythical civilization without writing evidence. Maybe they wrote on wood that couldn't survive for thousands of years...
