Bait - Review

Exactly what I want from my B-movies. The premise is ridiculous, but not so over-the-top it can't get by on movie logic. It plays out with a mostly straight face, so don't come into this expecting Syfy levels of schlock. When it's not relying on CGI (which is used very sparingly) this is also a very good looking film. You can tell a lot of work went into making the setting feel believable. The flooded store and parking garage where the action takes place are littered with debris and gruesome looking corpses. All of which makes the gorgeous underwater sequences that much more exciting and tense. Kimble Rendall even went the extra mile to show aquatic lifeforms other than sharks being swept into the city making the whole thing feel that much more naturalistic. The gore effects are also very well done ensuring that the blood hounds who typically frequent these movies will leave satisfied. The acting is a little flat across the board, but the characters themselves are memorable. The opening does an effective job of introducing the key players and establishing them in their roles. They are all generic stock archetypes though (the protagonist has suffered previous shark-related trauma for crying out loud) so they may prove too cliché for some. However, even if you don't necessarily enjoy their personalities, you'll likely still enjoy looking at them. Just about everyone onscreen is young and very sexy. If you're ever looking for a cheap shark flick because you want to see people get eaten without the more serious nature of Jaws, but also don't want to deal with the absurdity of something like Sharknado this can fill that niche nicely. Its a string of cool and even sometimes clever sequences that deliver the thrills without any of the ineptitude or stupidity that makes so many of its peers terrible.
