I Spit on Your Grave (1978)

I enjoy revenge movies, which means that--despite not being a huge fan--I sometimes end up watching rape revenge movies. I've seen some of the reboot sequels, but decided to watch the 1978 cult classic that launched that particular subgenre. Camille Keaton does a remarkably good job with a tough role, playing an appealing and vivacious young woman who is horrifically assaulted by a gang of sweaty, repulsive scumbags. While many movies of this type have a single rape scene, I was taken a bit off guard by how many separate scenes of sexual assault the film contains. It's like the men are playing catch and release with her. And given all that she suffers at the hands of her tormentors, even when she kills them it still feels like they're getting off lightly. This is a tough watch, and the age of the movie, with the film grain and 70s cinematography, makes it feel especially sweaty and sordid, but it's probably the best film of its often-imitated type.
