A hidden gem among 80s slashers
Movie · Review
Intruder (1989)The first time I watched this movie, it didn't leave a huge impression. I appreciated it a great deal more with a rewatch. The premise is simple but effective: an overnight crew of mostly young hourly workers are closing up a supermarket for the night and restocking the shelves when one a cashier's ex-boyfriend shows up and starts causing trouble. This movie makes the most of its limited cast and set of locations. Special effects are handled by horror stalwart Greg Nicotero, and the kill scenes are both imaginative and audaciously gory. There's quite a bit of overlap with the cast and crew of Evil Dead 2, with both Sam and Ted Raimi appearing, along with Dan Hicks and a brief cameo by Bruce Campbell. And one thing that struck me upon rewatching his how playful the camera angles are. We're shown characters reflected in aisle shelf mirrors, up from a bucket, from inside boxes, etc. This movie isn't incredibly well known, but it's worth watching by fans of 80s horror.
