a review of 进击的巨人真人版:后篇·世界终结
The second of Shinji Higuchi's live-action Attack on Titan adaptations takes a step back in terms of quality. The problem is that it tries to cram way too much plotting in with the hopes of providing a neat conclusion, complete with explanations behind everything, to it's take on an ongoing manga/anime series. This comes at the expense of what made the first movie so enjoyable; mainly watching people battle and killed/eaten by titans. So the majority of the film is spent watching the characters get from point A to point B without any fighting. The scenes that don't involve Eren and Captain Levi... Er, I mean Shikishima, feel a little inconsequential. Things are a little more dull this time around as a result. There just isn't enough time to make viewers truly care about these reveals and honestly they just aren't that satisfying in the first place. Hopefully this isn't the same stuff Isayama had in mind for the manga. It's the final act where things turn around and the action makes it's comeback. We don't get the same, bloody humans on titans action as before. Instead it's of the titan vs. titan variety. Watching two dudes in rubber monster suits duke it out brings back fun Godzilla memories and ends things on a slightly higher note than it started out on. "End of the World" is a case of trying to do too much in too little time. There's still some entertainment value to be found here, but overall it left me wanting more. Specifically, more of what was already delivered. It still nails the visual style and a few other elements, but poor plotting and a lack of action remove a lot of it's predecessor's fun from the mix.
