Great and Terrible, as is CW Tradition...

Tom Swift - Review

Why can't we ever get a show with characters this likeable and representation this good, that doesn't go totally out of its way to uphold the neoliberal order?!

Tom spends most of the show obsessing over consumerism and fast fashion, while the villains are... primarily concerned about the proliferation of microplastics and the tendency of technology to increase human bondage? Everyboddddyyyyy is obscenely rich, and at no point does anyone ever question the morality of that. Sometimes Tom will invent something they need for plot reasons, and to brag, he'll also mention how it solves some global problem that's killing people everyday. It's never brought up how he has had the resources and knowledge to do that all along, but never bothered to until it was beneficial to him specifically. The overall objective of the show is to save a terrible, terrible man who once tried to scifi conversion therapy the gay out of Tom as a kid, nearly killing him. But he's miraculously had a change of heart and become a better man, conveniently now that he needs Tom's help? Bullshit.

At the same time, the show doesn't shy away from dealing with racism/transphobia/homophobia/etc, and it has the queer Black trans rep we so need front and center the whole way through. So.... if you can stomach the Billionaire apologia, I'd still say it's worth watching.
