On a boat, sailing into Aarhus at sunset. Ahead, the skyline of the Aarhus Ø mixed-use waterfront area known for its eclectic geometric architecture. It is almost in silhouette, backed by a cloudless blue-purple sky with a stripe of fiery sunset orange on the horizon line. The sea is rippling with a luscious deep blue-black colour. Rising ahead of us, dominating the scene, the triangular AARhus apartment block - a striking triangle of glass and balconies rising 65 metres above everything, like a gigantic sentinel guarding the city gates. Low below it, just as eye-catching by contrast, a picturesque little pier beacon, like a mini-lighthouse, white with a green top, just a few metres tall. Old and new landmarks, welcoming seafarers to the city.

Foreground, close up, bushy green grass and leaves. Rising up from them, about a dozen purple and orange and red tulips, blooms fully opened and ballooning out. The colours are glowing I'm strong sunlight. Beyond them, a glimpse of blue harbour water. Beyond that, the city coast road skyline including turrets and spires that sort of harmonise with the tall tulip stems. We are standing in the community gardens on one of the harbour piers where locals and community groups and schools grow and harvest flowers and vegetables on council garden patches.

Sailing into Aarhus harbour. The sea is dull dark blue with distinct swathes of thick white foam from boat wake curling on it, as if bored mermaids doodled on the water’s surface. The sky is cloudless pale blue. Ahead, dark from backlight, the city skyline: the pier, geodome, cathedral spire, custom house turrets. A peaceful scene, I think. A quiet arrival to the city.

Harbour skylines, seen through the rigging and furled sails of an historic wooden ship anchored at the promenade. Geometric modern buildings of different heights and shapes – triangular, oblong, rectangular, a geodome. A giant industrial crane. Dockhouses. It’s a very bright sunny day. The sky and sea are deep blues, glowing in the sunshine. The scene is a bit jumbled, a bit messy, not special - just a glimpse of the city on an unusually bright blue day.

The morning commute, if you live in Aarhus and walk or cycle to work by the harbour. Around 8am, just before sunrise one morning last November. The sea looks as cold as it is – rippling in wind, dark blue-black with a cold silvery sheen. Big black clouds are converging from left and right on an almost peculiar cloudless gap of cloudless sky just above the opposite docks. Over there, we can see the silhouettes of huge industrial cranes, factory chimneys, and warehouses. Above them, a clear space of light blue sky with a stripe of orange from the approaching sun which may, or may not, actually appear above the horizon this Winter day. The small gap of clear sky with a hint of sunrise that the huge black clouds seem to be attacking makes it feel as if the gods of night and day are arguing about who's in charge.

Aarhus harbour in January, looking in towards the coast road and city centre. It's snowing. The day is fully grey. It's noon, but there's only a hint of daylight. The sky is blank grey. The sea is black and empty. The city skyline is picturesque with historic buildings, the customs house turrets, the cathedral spire. White snow on the roofs contrasts with their red-brick facades. Foreground, filling the lower third of the image, at my feet on this pier: thick untrodden fluffy white snow dissected by dark lines from the edges of concrete benches and steps. The feeling of the image to me: ice-cold, austere, angular, oddly empty of life and warmth, given that it’s the middle of the day in a lively little city.

Aarhus harbour after dark during festival week at the start of September. We are standing on the library terrace looking down and across the water to historic and modern buildings all lit up, many in rainbow colours. There is a big variation in shapes and heights, giving the illuminated skyline a sense of a wavelength. Conversely, there are no waves in the sea. The harbour water is black and perfectly still, so the lit-up buildings are reflected in it upside-down. It’s a poor, blurry, grainy photo. Neither my old phone nor me are good at taking night-time pictures. But I think it still gives a sense of a city dressed up for a party, calm and festive at the same time.

Water’s edge, mid-city Aarhus. The sky is a light blue with big fluffy white clouds. The sea ripples in sumptuous deep blues. Across the water on outer piers: warehouses, a 75m tall blue crane, a geodome. Close up, right in front of us, the prow of an unseen ship. We can only see the beautifully polished wooden boom with rigging and furled white sails on it. The perspective makes it look as if it’s underlining the geodome on the far pier. The feeling of the scene, to me: fresh, invigorating, filled with light and with summery blues and hues.

Aarhus, looking across the harbour. A cold bright day. The sea is deep blue and barely rippling. The sky is bright light blue with almost fake-looking fluffy white clouds hanging low in it. On either side of the port opening across from us, we see a triangular apartment block and geodome and a giant angular industrial crane. Sailing serenely through the middle of the otherwise empty sea, the sightseeing boat Helene of Aarhus. An historic boat with two decks and paddlewheels, it is white with red trimming and multicoloured bunting. It shines out against all the startlingly bright blue. The boat’s old-fashioned style makes it look as if it’s sailing in from the past.

A vast empty room. Ahead and to our right, a massive wall of floor-to-ceiling windows about five metres high. Inside, the highly polished floor glows blue in reflected light from outside. Inside, everything seems dark by contrast with bright sunshine and the cloudless blue sky outside. The windows frame the harbour and city outside as if it were a scene on a film screen. We see a slice of sea; the cathedral with its distinctive red-brick clock tower and green copper spire; the old customs house with turrets; the coast road. We can see the tiny figures of people walking and biking and resting on the promenade. Inside, off to the side, there is a single dark chair in the shadows. It faces the windows, as if waiting for someone to sit down and start watching the city. You can’t tell from the photo, but we are in one of the main public rooms in Dokk 1 Aarhus Main Library. It's been emptied to prepare for an event.

We’re on an outer pier at Aarhus Harbour, standing under a gigantic industrial lifting mechanism that covers the width of the street, rolling on rails on either side. The metal is bright turquoise-green with railings and beams and exciting spoked wheels criss-crossing at exciting diagonals. It looks like what I would have built with my Meccano set in the 70s if I hadn’t been given a Sindy doll instead. The cloudless sky and calm sea are deep blue. The mechanism’s geometry is casting nice shadow patterns. Badly framed by me, off-centre, through the gaps in the mechanism, we see the city: the waterfront library, the coast road, the mid-city skyline including the cathedral and the former customs house with turrets and spires.

It is covered in seaweed and barnacles; the wheelhouse is white with red and blue trim; the first letters of the boat name Jakob are seen in white. The water is black and still - the city lights and buildings are reflected, inverted, in it.

Glædelig mandag. Monday, again. But it’s the first Monday in December, so Monday's wearing a Christmas jumper and a Santy hat. But it's still Monday. Here's a postcard from #Aarhus to wish you a good day and a good week.

Standing inside artist Olafur Eliasson‘s ‘Your rainbow panorama', a 150m circular walkway with glass panels in a shifting rainbow of colours. It is 50 metres above the city, on the top of Aros art museum in mid-city Aarhus, Denmark. The glass colours, the time of day, the weather change the mood and hue of the 360º views across the city as you walk along. In this photo, it’s after dark, so the glass seems both transparent and black, dotted with reflections. Outside, we can see city lights – car lights, window lights, illuminated facades. Most prominent is the city hall clock tower, a symbol of the city, illuminated in green. And if you squint a bit, you can make out the twinkling lights of the city’s Christmas tree on the square outside city hall - Rådhuset. And the ice-skating rink in front of the concert hall – Musikhuset.

And suddenly it was Monday again, again. Glædelig mandag. Here's a postcard from #Aarhus to wish you a good day and a good week.

Mid-afternoon, the sun is just setting, we're shivering on an outer pier looking back across the freezing cold black-grey harbour water to the city skyline here in Aarhus, Denmark. There's a long line of historic and modern buildings on the coast road, many with yellow lights just come on in their windows as the sky darkens. There's an icy sheen on the water. Just sailing by, a local sightseeing paddle-wheel boat, white and red, decked in Christmas bunting and lights. Reflections of the white lights are twinkling around in the black water, as if the fish have a Christmas tree down there.

Across the harbour, the port entrance towards open sea: distinctive modern buildings in an eclectic array of heights and shapes – triangular, oblong, rectangular, a geodome. warehouses, a 75 metre crane shaped like an angular iron giraffe. The crane is a striking blue that harmonises with the blue of the sea and sky. In contrast, dots of bright white in the deep blue sea – white seabirds and, near us and the rocks, a beautiful bright white swan, its neck curled in an S shape as it preens itself.

Aarhus harbour, a winter sunrise. The sky is pale bluey-purple with wispy clouds and a tinge of salmon-pink. The sea is like glass. The water reflects the sunrise hues - purple, blue, pink, yellow. Across the water, the industrial dock with warehouses, factory chimneys and giant cranes. At our feet, grey pavement slabs leading to the edge of the promenade. Along the water's edge, a sprinkling of a few black rocks that look like ink blots on the water. On the far left, behind the silhouettes of the dock buildings, a giant fireball of glaring white with a deep yellow flaming border – looking like an atom bomb going off: the sun.

Water’s edge, mid-city Aarhus, the mixed-use harbour quarter Aarhus Ø. To the left, a pier lined by buildings in distinctive triangular and rectangular shapes. These include Kampanilen, a 19-storey red-brick apartment tower with a gigantic built-in glass window near the top that is an actual clock. Barely visible, the tiny figures of people walking, cycling, sitting on the boardwalk. Across the water, industrial cranes like giant’s chairs. The sky is light blue with a few wispy white clouds. The sea is a rippling range of luscious deep blues. Dotted around in the sea below cable tracks, bright white water-sport ramps. Alone on the water, in the middle, standing upright and casually, as walking on water, a wakeboarder with a trail of startlingly white wake behind, the foam curved as if they’ve just hit the brakes to turn round and go back the way they came. The scene is invigorating, fresh, very blue, the opposite of what you'd normally picture when you hear the words 'inner city'.

Aarhus, the promenade. Most of the image is filled with sea and sky. The sea is calm with just a few surface crinkles. The sky is clear, except for a few faraway slivers of wispy white cloud. The sky and sea are luscious shades of blue-black; navy; deep blue; bright blue; light blue. To our left, jutting out farther along the pier: three white waterfront apartment blocks. They are strikingly angular: a 142-metre narrow oblong block; a clump of triangular blocks like icebergs; a tall rectangular block. They are glowing white in strong Winter sunlight, highlighting how shockingly blue the natural world around them is. We can also see a sliver of a yellow pier railing to the left that meets the rest of the pier at a sharp angle, as if it were a spear flung in to land from the water.

‘Twas the Monday before Christmas. Glædelig mandag. Here's a Christmas card from #Aarhus to wish you a good day and a good week and a glædelig jul.

Taken in a snowstorm last December, a view of a snow-covered pier at the harbour, mid-city, Aarhus, Denmark. Falling snowflakes blur in streaks from a grey, snow-filled sky. In front of us, an expanse of grey-white snow with just a few footprints in it. To the right, a snowy slope with straggly tall grasses poking up through the snow. Rising beyond in the distance, barely visible through the fog of snow, the shapes of an oblong and a triangular building, misty and grey, like ghost buildings. To the left, a clump of bushy evergreen trees. Their branches are trimmed in snow, as if they’re auditioning for a part in a Christmas card. Everything is muted, almost monochrome. Except, in the middle, we see the city’s name spelled out in separate, giant, vivid red block letters, each about 3 metres high. A A R H U S. This is the Aarhus city sign that greets visitors arriving by sea. Not to be outdone by mere trees, each letter is Christmasly edged in snow too.

Aarhus harbour. On the far side, the docks. A blue 75-metre industrial crane looms above a warehouse with a giant Ukrainian flag painted on its façade beside a giant black-and-white sketch of the craggy face of a local businessman smoking a cigarette, with an aura of Beckett about him. The sky is filled with white and grey clouds with pale blue between them. The rippling seawater is dull silvery-blue. Tiny in the distance, two people in wetsuits stand upright on paddleboards, leaning over as they row forward. Close up in the foreground, at the edge of the frame, flying from a flagpole on the stern of an unseen boat anchored just to our right: the red-and-white Danish flag, flapping in the wind. A splash of movement and strong colour in the otherwise quiet, muted scene.

A vast empty room with a highly polished grey floor. Strong daylight outside makes it seem dark by contrast in here. The walls and floor reflect blue from the bright blue cloudless sky outside. Floor-to-ceiling picture windows about five metres high form a massive glass wall in front of us. It frames the harbour and city like a scene on a film screen. We see a slice of sea; green copper cathedral spires; the old customs house with turrets; the coast road; historic and modern buildings. All gleaming bright on a rare sunny winter day. The cinematic effect is heightened by the fact that the vast room is entirely empty except for a simple, solitary chair in the middle of the floor facing towards the glass. As if you can take a seat to watch a private viewing of the city. You can’t tell from the photo, but we are in the reading room in Dokk 1 Aarhus Main Library. It's been emptied to prepare for an event.

Aarhus city, looking back from an outer pier at the harbour. Right, foreground, on our pier: the edge of the stern of an old black wooden ship, ringed by huge black buffer-tyres. They seem bombastic in contrast to the rest of the calm, bright scene. The cloudless sky and calm seawater are luscious shades of blue, almost startlingly blue. The city skyline is picturesque with historic buildings, with turrets, with the cathedral spire. There are no people or boats in the water. But there is an oddly organised long, thin line of about hundred bright white seagulls who are bobbing in single file near the water’s edge on the city side. As if they've formed a union and are demanding to see the mayor to complain about the damage humans have done to the sea and to fish stocks.

Glædelig mandag. The last Monday of the year. So here we are. Sailing out of 2024, on a collision course with 2025. Here Be Dragons. Here’s a postcard from #Aarhus to wish you a good day and a good week and godt nytår.

Aarhus, Denmark. Mid-afternoon, shortly before sunset, freezing, snow just about to start falling, standing on an outer pier at the harbour looking across the water towards the city centre. Across from us, the skyline with historic and modern buildings including the cathedral spire; the old custom house turrets; yellow light in all the windows looking cosy under swirling black snow clouds. The sea is cold grey. Just to our left, the prow (or who knows, perhaps it’s the stern) of a navy-blue boat with a big, low, wine-red deck, yellow lamps glowing in the approaching dark. Its name gleams huge and white in the dusk: Hermes Aarhus. The Port of Aarhus tugboat. From this perspective, nothing is moving and yet the sky and clouds and boat and city seem to be converging, sort of stormily.
