A fantastic read. Guess I should read the first book now. Fortunately they can be read out of order without missing anything.

finished reading Ode to the Half-Broken
Fantastic. I wasn't sure about it when I picked this up, but it was a staff recommendation at the store, so I gave it a chance. Didn't take long at all to grab and hold my interest.
I could use some book recommendations. I am looking for folk tale collections which are
1. from cultures outside of Europe, and
2. were written by people _from_ that culture.
Ideally, they should also be translated into English (or German) by people from that culture as well.
It would also be a plus if they contain a lot of "local legends" which incorporate local geography and history (as opposed to "fairy tales" which take place at indeterminable places and times).
The Wizards and the Warriors by Hugh Cook. is on sale on LibroFM
This is part of Zenthos press's effort to republish Cook's Chronicles on an Age of Darkness.

I've finished: How Rory Thorne Destroyed the Multiverse by K. Eason
Rory Thorne is a wonderfully capable and competent protagonist. Following her makes this story, full of bad faith politics, feel cozy.
In many cases, when a fantasy story is moved into space, the author isn't very well versed in sci-fi and the space technology elements feel amaturish and uniformed. With K. Eason, this is not the case.
While the space tech elements are mostly setting, they are well thought out and well versed in genre nomenclature.
I must also say that the title of the novel while fascinating, does not reflect the size and scope of the plot. Rory is wonderful and brings down a corrupt and unjust system, but she does not collapse the multiverse.

Heute erscheint »Das vierte Feld«, mein Debüt und der erste Band von »Prägungen des Reiches«. Als eBook, Taschenbuch und Hardcover.
My debut »Das vierte Feld« is out today, book one of »Prägungen des Reiches«. It is written in German.
finished reading The Astral Library
Never in my life have I wanted to punch a villain so badly.
The first couple chapters were really depressing, and I was regretting starting this book just before bed. But chapter three turned things around pretty quickly, and from there I had a great time reading this. I recommend it to anyone who loves books in general.
finished reading Dungeon Crawler Carl
Goddammit Donut.
That was fun. After reading so many "isekai" novels and manga, I'm a little burnt out on the whole litRPG concept. But this book was sitting there on the shelf with multiple staff recommendations, so I figured why not at least try the first volume. And I'm glad I did. It doesn't just check off a list of tropes like so many other stories, but rather does its own thing within a similar framework. I'll be picking up the second book next shopping trip.
📚 An abandoned library, somewhere in England. Once the shelves were stocked with books, but now the only visitors are pigeons (and the occasional photographer!).
What was the last book you read? Comment some suggestions, preferably horror or sci-fi genre please 😉

I've finished: On Such a Full Sea by Chang-rae Lee
A mix of a US and Chinese dystopia.
Melding familiar and unique post apocalyptic society tropes.
I was especially impressed with the wall painting sequence.
Fan is no heroine, she is just a determined girl moving through a harsh world. She breaks out of the rut set for her and that's enough.

I've Finished: Trading in Danger by Elizabeth Moon
Reading Trading in Danger was a strange experience.
My introduction to Moon's work was, Remnant Population, a novel that could not be more different in it's values.
While both main characters are seeking to assert their independence, they are complete opposites.
Kal Vatta is a young scion to a major sipping company. Drowning in privilege.
Ophelia is an elderly victim of a ruthless corporation.
Kal Vatta is constantly bailed out by her family, and told by everyone she meets how meritorious she is.
Ophelia is on her own and no other human acknowledges her merits.
Trading in Danger feels like it was written by a different author in a different time. Reading it in 2026 feels icky.
A nepo baby is being raised by her mega wealthy family to think she is building her own career.
The meritocracy is a capitalist lie we don't believe anymore.
