Book number 3 on my #StephenKing re-read journey.
This was a lot of fun to revisit. Another one I read decades ago. This has so many of my favorite short SK stories in it. Many many classics.
This book turned out a remarkable ELEVEN movie + tv adaptations. Absolutely insane. Talk about legendary.
Really hard to pick a favorite but Battleground is so much fun.
My personal experience as the sometime operator of a 1980s Xerox photocopier

Notes about #usability #design from Winograd and Adler's Usability ( #bookstodon ) relevant to my #NicCLIM #commonLisp #gamedev .
Introduces design's wicked problems and the implications for what design even is, conveyed by the book via a series of c. 80s case studies.

Junto a él encontraréis otras historias. Si alguna de ellas os llama la atención, dadle caña sin miedo. O con él.
Y si compartís esta publicación para ayudar a que mi trabajo llegue a más personas me haréis el hombre más feliz del fediverso 😊

Two books I loved, part 1:
Gliff - Ali Smith
A fable about survival in a totalitarian surveillance state. A reflection on childhood, siblinghood, and the cost and worth of kindness. A dance with language and memory. I was torn between the impulse to read it all in one sitting and the urge to savor every single sentence.
Travelling soon, please give me your #fiction recommendations! I normally read military flavoured hard SciFi, but I'm open to all suggestions. Normally I don't get much of a response to such requests, so PLEASE recommend me something to read, especially if you've written something yourself #bookstodon

I left this one as *just* picking up and using lambda forms around the map so as not to clutter up the example, a finished game of life game will be separate.

Before Book One.
Between Harmony and Fire is now available.
A collection of mythic fragments from the world of Akidir.
a few years ago i mentioned that i wrote a book about the exciting, awkward and embarrassing experiences of growing up with computers and video games in the 80s and 90s.
i wanted to remember what it felt like being the only dorky computer kid at school. or what it was like to hear my first modem handshake sound. or starting the first flamewar on the school's national FirstClass BBS in the macintosh lab over the lunch-hour
it was originally something i wrote only for my family and friends who were there at the time.
and then i met all of you folks when i started my first masto instance 4 years ago. i had no idea there were so many hardcore retrocomputing and gaming nerds out there; unix and mac and ms-dos folks alike.
so i mentioned it casually. i was surprised by the interest in the book.
so i spent the better part of the past 3 years rewriting the book for *you* fellow mastodon dorkus malorkuses. the book is a celebration of all of the best (and worst) parts of a kid growing up in the digital age.
we're all busy old tired stressed folks now. so every memory and cringetacular story is short enough to read on a 5 minute bus/metro/toilet ride. they're weaved together into an arc that starts at my family's first Tandy TRS-80 and ends at my school's Mac LC II and building my first Pentium 133.
it's finally published, and i'm super proud of what it became thanks to everyone here nerding out for years.
enjoy the book. i wrote it just for you. ❤️

#AynRand’s original introduction to The Virtue of Selfishness is now online--and it directly contradicts most of the claims people make about her #ethics.
If your picture of Rand comes from social media threads, YouTube rants, or second-hand “hot takes,” this is the text that breaks the spell.
Let’s clear out the biggest straw men right away:
❌ “Rand said selfishness means hurting people.”
No. She argues that rational self‑interest forbids coercion, exploitation, and parasitism. Predators aren’t “selfish”—they’re short‑range, self‑destructive, and irrational.
❌ “It’s just an excuse to do whatever you want.”
She draws a hard boundary between whim and #reason. Her ethics demands long‑range thinking, integrity, and principled action — the opposite of impulse.
❌ “#Objectivism celebrates cruelty.”
The introduction explicitly rejects cruelty as irrational. Benevolence is not only compatible with #egoism—it’s a natural expression of a rational, confident person.
❌ “Rand denies moral principles.”
She denies sacrifice as a moral ideal. She does not deny #morality. She argues for a code rooted in reality, reason, and the requirements of human life.
If you want to understand the argument instead of the mythology, read the primary source--it’s short, sharp, and surprisingly accessible.
Read more for context on the full book, editions, and themes.

Starting my 2026 book thread with a beautiful cover 😍 And the book behind it is just as beautiful. Just the sort of 'place as character' narrative that I really enjoy, this is a lively and lyrical exploration of a certain landscape and the people, animals and plants that inhabit it. Even the clouds and the geology get a voice.
However heavy our lives may feel, Solà reminds us how fleeting they are to the mountains and the woods, which is perspective I find comforting.
Ello sweet and lovely (reading) Friendos
The last two months, I've been caught up reading again! At times where my body needed to relax, recharge, but my brain was still looking to be entertained... I got back to reading more again. 😊
Halfway through November, I learned about the new Dan Brown book in his Robert Langdon series. It had been a while since I read his books, so I set off, starting with Angels & Demons.
At the end of December, I finished the 6th book, the Secret of Secrets. I read another Dan Brown book after that, Deception Point.
I finished it yesterday. But now... As I started it at the end of December, is this my last finished book of 2025? Or is it the first one of 2026?
I've never really tracked my reading, but I thought it may be nice to make a thread this year, pinning 📌 it to my profile, and adding the books that I've managed to finish in 2026.
Maybe Deception Point was the last of 2025, maybe it's the first of 2026... But this is the first post of my #BooksIn2026.
I've now started a re-read of the Hunger Game series, which I'll read in the order of their release.
Books 📚 of 2026:
1. Deception Point - Dan Brown
2. The Hunger Games - Suzanne Collins
3. Catching Fire (the Hunger Games series, book 2) - Suzanne Collins

🚨 NEW EPISODE 🚨
This week we recorded our first ever book club. It was a bit of an experiment, but we’re super happy with how it turned out!
We discussed Vincenzo Latronico’s smash-hit novel (or is it even a novel?) 'Perfection'.
It worked well thanks to all the listeners who shared their thoughts about 'Perfection' (including many via Mastodon). We were truly astonished by the response. Thank you!
