Quick poll for Mastodon server administrators : what is your biggest pain point between those two?
You can add a bit more detail in a reply, and I am not interested in other areas.

If you're a #MastoAdmin, and you've defederated #Threads, change the URL to threads [dot] com.
And now it's time for your semi-regular reminder that the fediverse is ran by volunteers usually paying for hosting costs out of their own pockets.
Please consider donating to the admin(s) of your local instance! Every bit helps!
Here's mine for homestead.social and pix.lgbt 💜
Our 1000-active-user cap for FLOSS.social is still in effect, and will soon again be reached as we welcome a new wave of community members.
This number is determined as the mean (average) between the "active in last month" and "six months" from the data at: https://floss.social/nodeinfo/2.0
Small servers make for good communities and good federation.
We just released Mastodon 4.3.8 and 4.2.21. They contain a few minor bug fixes and a minor security fix.
If you are running nightly versions, an updated container image is available under the `nightly.2025-05-07-security` tag
Full release notes and update instructions are available on our GitHub release page: https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/releases/
I’ve just released v7.1.0 of FediFetcher. This is an important release that will significantly improve resource usage and running time of FediFetcher, as well as help our users be good citizens of the fediverse.
I encourage you all to update to the latest version asap.
For full details including update instructions visit the release page:
https://github.com/nanos/FediFetcher/releases/tag/v7.1.1
(Edited to point link to 7.1.1 - this is a bug fix, and you should update to 7.1.1 rather than 7.1.0 if you can.)

Some interesting insights from the 2024 @iftas Fediverse Trust & Safety Needs Assessment Report.
- most communities operate on donations
- very few moderators receiving compensation
- roughly 1 moderator for every 1,200 active accounts
- only 16% of communities have 24–hour moderator coverage
- nearly 1/2 of moderator teams lack formal guidance
- 1 in 5 moderators report experiencing trauma or burnout this year

Looks like Mastodon is finally getting some built in functionality to fetch missing replies:

🥳
Has anyone implemented this in their Mastodon fork? https://foryoufeed.vercel.app
I kinda like it.
If a Mastodon server closes down, members can download offline post archives, but there's currently no official way to display these archives online.
A proposed solution by @oliphant is a static website generator they have created called "Posty", which turns Mastodon public post archives into standalone static public websites:

It could be useful for servers that are closing down, admins could perhaps offer this as a service to their members.
Let it snow! ❄️
I have added snow to my instance during the winter holidays. It's a tiny JS canvas and fades out on scroll down. The snow is also respecting the system accessibility settings, it won't be there if you prefer reduced motion.
Here's the source code for server admins: https://github.com/ronilaukkarinen/mastodon/commit/9bf1563af50842a5f61b34b7cc095fb746e5d15b#diff-5fcd1b6168ec33e0eff0a05fcdeacfab68e261215bbdb719be6b3526173be770

ummm 😅 guess we're going to have some surprise maintenance tonight!
Expect some downtime later for upgrades!
Great, we're at the point of selling Mastodon user data.

We just released Mastodon 4.3.4, 4.2.17 and 4.1.23. They contain bug fixes as well as security fixes (medium severity)
We recommend every instance administrator to update as soon as possible.

We just released Mastodon 4.2.12, fixing a bug introduced in 4.2.11 which caused notifications for mentions from local moderator accounts to be dropped. If you updated to 4.2.11, we strongly recommend you to upgrade to 4.2.12.
Version 4.1.19 is not impacted.

The Fediverse makes me anxious sometimes. It's not always pure joy and bliss, especially as an admin.
Top 5 things that make me anxious here:
1. When people can't just agree to disagree, but have to crucify others or report them because they didn't like what they said - or even start a hateful campaign for it
2. When people endlessly nitpick and dissect otherwise good post
3. When the obscure and dark instances or nostr users find your posts and start posting hateful content because of "free speech"
4. When you get judged if you use the wrong word or even hint towards something that someone doesn't agree on
5. When you make a decision in moderation and any decision pisses off someone - lose-lose situation
It's not daily or often times even monthly, but it happens. I'm glad we mostly get along though.
Blocking, fediblocking, reporting and muting are the most important features here.
We just released Mastodon 4.3.3, 4.2.15 and 4.1.22. They contain a few bug fixes as well as a security fix (medium severity, https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/security/advisories/GHSA-5wxh-3p65-r4g6)
We recommend every instance administrator to update as soon as possible.

🚨 Exciting Announcement!!
🚨
Masto.NYC now has DONATION REWARDS!!!! For monthly donations of at least $5, we'll mail you a four-pack of our exclusive vinyl stickers!
Not only is the art made locally, but the stickers are printed here too! We're very proud to offer these and hope you like them as much as we do 😍
As with all donations, these are tax deductible and help cover our costs.
If you care about what you're building, don't host your stuff with Hetzner. Don't trust them.
They will take you down without warning and won't answer your queries. For sure, they'll send you an invoice, tho.
Happened before with @Ursalzona and other fediverse servers, happened now with this Peertube instance, and it's best to avoid being their next victim.
Go host your stuff somewhere else. And keep your backup routines working.
We just released Mastodon 4.3.7 and 4.2.20 and 4.1.25. They contain a few minor bug fixes.
Note that this will most likely be the last Mastodon 4.1 release, and 4.1 will be unsupported in 6 days, so we highly advise you to update if you run it.
Full release notes and update instructions are available on our GitHub release page: https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/releases/
I just mailed out a short stack of envelopes containing new Masto.NYC donors' sticker packs (https://masto.nyc/stickers).
I’m very aware that one has to be very choosy about one's charitable giving these days. A donation to your Mastodon server not only helps pay its bills—it sends such a strong statement about how much this service means to you.
It's an incredible and humbling morale boost during strange times. Thank you. #MastoNYC #MastoAdmin
