Video is such a big part of how we share, learn, and stay updated online. But with #BigTech monopolies and censorship (both private and state), it’s key to have alternatives.
This month, we’re talking to @peertube, a network of independent, self-managed and interconnected platforms. They received a grant from @NGIZero as part of the #NGI0 project.
> Now, see where we go next:
Since 2020, Next Generation Internet (NGI) programmes, part of the European Commission's Horizon programme, fund free software in Europe using a cascade funding mechanism. This year, according to the Horizon Europe working draft detailing funding programmes for 2025, we notice that Next Generation Internet is not mentioned any more as part of Cluster 4.
The signatories of this open letter say: The European Union must keep funding free software
@NGIZero just dropped the 2025 list of grant-funded FOSS projects, and there's some bangers this year!:

Here's 6 I'm super excited for in reverse order:
6. OpenStreetMap-NG
"a more accessible, privacy-respecting, and developer-friendly mapping platform."
"Our mission is to revolutionize the map and provide a better experience for all users. It is simply the Next Generation of OpenStreetMap."

Starting the year with a new interview on Building a #FreeInternetoftheFuture:
- We talked to @carol about @decidim and its critical role in supporting civil society at a time when freedoms and rights are under threat.
> About 5.7 billion people (72% of the world's population) now live under authoritarian rule.
#Decidim, “a digital platform for citizen participation," received a grant by @NGIZero.
We're organizing a NGI Zero network meetup at #FOSDEM. Everyone who is part of or interested in the Next Generation Internet is welcome for a meet and greet on Saturday at 13.00 CET in room AW1.121.
Besides the BoF room there are also many other NGIZero related events like booths, devrooms and over 60 talks.
For and overview of all, see: https://nlnet.nl/events/20250201/FOSDEM/index.html
