Using a red filter during the black and white conversion amplifies the red colour's brightness and darkens the blue colour in the photo. Using this you can avoid reflecting light white off the white wall and literally paint a scene with brightness values!

It might seem unintuituve, but using coloured lights to get a black and white shot gives you so much control over contrast in the scene.

When doing a black and hite conversion, colour filters will amplify the brightness of the same colour (eg red) and darken the opposite colour (eg blue). This allows you to select partks of the sceene to accentuate usinng colour before processing to black and white.
