Random thought of the day:

The first vertebrates, what we colloquially think of as complex life, appeared on earth roughly 500 million years ago.

The human agricultural revolution, and the beginning of what we think of as civilization, started roughly 10,000 years ago.

In other words, the entire span of human civilization could have occurred 50,000 times since complex life first appeared.

That's enough time for at least one flourishing civilization of intelligent non-human animals to have emerged, developed, peaked, collapsed, and disappeared. That's enough time for more than one.

A mind- bending story filled with unexpected twists and turns, with enough science to give one pause regarding the plausibility of such events. Given the propensity of current AI's to be far less reliable than predicted, it is quite likely that advanced AI will slip its tether for reasons its developers never even considered . . .

Lately l've been reading a ton of hard scifi, and this book is that...and so much more. Equal parts action, horror, and even drama, I can honestly say the description of this book doesn't do it much justice. I started and finished this book in a day or two (work gets in the way, natch) and loved every second of it. The science behind the engineering is legit and it has a fresh take on the downsides to time-travel. Can't wait for the next book in the series!

Non linear
Excellently written. One glaring inconsistency at the end just before the epilogue. Not a time travel book, but a time manipulation story. The story is written linearly, but because of the time manipulation, the reader gets facts and scenes out of order so that one is always guessing, and involved with determining the explanation as to why something previously read turned out the way it did. You're therefore left with a kind of mix of sci-fi and who done it. The story concludes with some questions unanswered although they can be reasonably predicted. There's a promise of a book two, but I have difficulty believing it can live up to the excitement exhibited by book one.
