The tireless Manoel de Oliveira, now over 100 years old, can trace his directorial career back to the silent era. His newest film, an adaptation of a 19th century short story, is easily one of his most enjoyable in recent times. The premise is simple: while on the train, a man recounts his tale of love and woe to a receptive middle-aged lady. His object of desire? The titular blond-haired girl. Though fable-like, droll and brief, the intellectual heft makes this surprising tale both modern and anachronistic.

A photographer, Isaac is asked by hotel owners to take portraits of their recently deceased daughter Angélica. When he looks at her through the lens of his camera, she appears to come back to life just for him. He instantly falls in love with her. Watching a promo video for another company, he's convinced he could do a much better job than the boss, if only there was a vacancy. Still unemployed after two years, as money gets tighter and his patriarchal pride takes a battering, Bruno decides to act. In his determination to regain his rightful place in the paper manufacturing industry, he realises that should an appropriate job become available he'd have a far better chance if he could eliminate the other leading candidates. Literally.

Directed by Costa Gavras (Amen), Jose Garcia displays flawless comic timing in his nuanced performance as Bruno, a man driven to desperate acts by heartless social circumstances.
