2016年12月17日，KOEI正式公布了《真三国无双》系列的最新续作《真三国无双8》。《真三国无双8》将采取开放世界的设定，游戏将有共83名武将登场，并将追加新武将周仓，同时官方表示游戏还会有更多新武将登场。　 制作人铃木表示，之所以会选择开放世界，首先是因为他们想要做出一些和之前不同的东西，并且目前的硬件水平已经能够达到作出这样环境的要求。 游戏中将会收纳整个中国地图，但因为地形过于庞大，会有各种地形和险要，能够战斗的区域也会受到一定限制，因此制作团队会尽量把诸如虎牢关和中原这样的战场做得更加细致。
