The group created this uncommon name by adding thousand years to the historic battle of Hastings in 1066. Unfortunately, their lifespan was rather short: from Spring 1971 to Summer 1972. Their one and only album is nothing short of an all time classic: Reflections On The Future (1972), recorded during Autumn 1971 at the Dierks Studio, Stommeln near Cologne. This album contained five long heavy progressive tracks with a dramatic mood and a quite unique German styling. "At My Home", a fast tempo opener, kicked off the album with stunning heavy guitars, swirling hammond organs and Geff Harrison's great, though slightly soul-influenced vocals. The next track "Autumn" brought in the topics of death and desintergration. The melancholic lyrics predated Pink Floyd's "Time": "Butterking" had weird, trippy lyrics dealing with the arrival of the Butterking (??) - the king of butterflies! The track is an uncommon masterpiece, featuring jungle sound effects, very slow and heavy organ and guitar riffs interrupted by perverted "ragtime" piano interludes. The 15 minute title track offered some great instrumental excursions, ending with a psychedelic space flight! "How Do You Feel" rounded off the album in a marvellous way, featuring a haunting vocal arrangement. The original version of this song (recorded some months prior to the album sessions) lasted for 13 minutes! The musicians of the group excelled throughout the album. Engineer Dieter Dierks ensured great sound quality and added his patented "cosmic" phasing effects. (Those who have heard the Kosmische Kuriere albums will know what I'm talking about!) Due to poor sales and a ruined economy, one of Germany's best groups had a premature death only months after the album's release. A projected 1972 single was never released. Their legacy is an album that should be in every serious German rock collection! It's quite rare that so many talented musicians are assembled in one group. They were later involved in many other projects: Geff Harrison and Cagey Mrozeck joined Kin Ping Meh, in time for their third album (released on Zebra). Steve Robinson (his real name was Rainer Geyer!) played with Nine Days' Wonder and Aera. Veit Marvos recorded with Emergency, Tiger B. Smith and Midnight Circus. Konstatin Bommarius played drums for Abacus and on Karthago's Rock'n'Roll Testament. None of these later projects have stood the test of time as well as Reflections On The Future. United Artists originals sell for DEM 500 in mint condition.

Returning to Gentle Giant's fourth album after any kind of lengthy absence, it's astonishing just how little Octopus has dated. Often written off at the time as a pale reflection of the truly gargantuan steps being taken by the likes of Jethro Tull and Barclay James Harvest, the band's closest relatives in the tangled skein of period prog, Gentle Giant often seemed more notable for its album art than its music. Octopus, however, marries the two seamlessly, with the cover speaking for itself, of course. And the mood continues within, the deliciously convoluted opening &The Advent of Panurge& itself riding waves of sonic tentacles as Derek Shulman's guitar shrieks short but so effective bursts around the thundering bass and, occasionally, churchy organ. Against the pulsating volume of the album's heavier tracks -- &Panurge& is joined by &A Cry for Everyone& -- the band's excursions into less excitable territory are never less than captivating. Twiddly though they are, the sometimes a cappella &Knots,& the lilting &Dog's Life,& and the Yes-with-fiddles-ish &Raconteur Troubadour& all have moments of sublime sweetness, while the instrumental &The Boys in the Band& is a succession of quirky showcases for, indeed, all the boys. Occasionally arrangements do get overly cluttered -- with each of the six bandmembers doubling up on at least three different instruments, there's a distinct sense of overdubs for overdubbing's sake. Follow the key instruments alone, however, and the soundscapes not only make perfect sense, but so do the flourishes and intrusions that rattle around. And the end result is an album that has withstood the test of time a lot better than anyone might have expected.

Ege Bamyası is the fourth studio album by the German experimental rock band Can which was originally released as an LP in 1972 by United Artists. The album contains the single "Spoon", which charted in the Top 10 in Germany, largely because of its use as the theme of a German TV thriller mini-series called "Das Messer" (The Knife). The success of the single allowed Can to move to a better studio in which they recorded Ege Bamyası. Ege Bamyası was remastered as a hybrid SACD in 2004 which includes a booklet with commentary on the album by former Melody Maker journalist David Stubbs, as well as previously unreleased photos of the band.

Thick as a Brick is the fifth studio album by the British rock band Jethro Tull, released in 1972. The album is notable for only including one song, which spans the entire album. Thick as a Brick was deliberately crafted in the style of a concept album, as well as a "bombastic" and "over the top" parody of the then-prevalent vogue for concept albums. The original packaging, designed like a newspaper, claims the album to be a musical adaptation of an epic poem by the fictional 8-year-old genius Gerald Bostock, though the lyrics were actually written by the band's frontman, Ian Anderson. The album was recorded in about three weeks in December 1971, featuring music composed by Anderson and arranged with the contribution of all band members. The live show of 1972 included the playing of the full suite, with various comic interruptions. Thick as a Brick is considered by critics the first release by Jethro Tull entirely consisting of progressive rock music and received mixed reviews upon its release. Nonetheless, it was a commercial success and topped various charts in 1972. Today it is regarded as a classic of progressive rock and has received several accolades. Ian Anderson produced a follow-up to the album in 2012, focused on the adult life of Gerald Bostock.

Foxtrot is the fourth studio album from the English rock band Genesis, released in October 1972 on Charisma Records. The album was recorded following the tour in support of their previous album, Nursery Cryme (1971). Side two features "Supper's Ready", a 23-minute track that is considered a key work in progressive rock and has been described by AllMusic as the band's "undisputed masterpiece". Foxtrot was the band's greatest commercial and critical success at the time of its release, reaching number 12 in the UK and receiving largely positive reviews. As with their previous two albums, Foxtrot initially failed to chart in the United States. A single from the album, "Watcher of the Skies", was released as a single in October 1972. Foxtrot was reissued with a new stereo and 5.1 surround sound mix as part of their 2008 Genesis 1970–1975 box set.

Harvest is the fourth studio album by Canadian musician Neil Young, released on February 14, 1972 on Reprise Records, catalogue RS 6317. It featured the London Symphony Orchestra on two tracks, while noted guests David Crosby, Graham Nash, Linda Ronstadt, Stephen Stills, and James Taylor contributed vocals. It topped the Billboard 200 album chart for two weeks, and spawned two hit singles, "Old Man", which peaked at #31 on the Billboard Hot 100, and "Heart of Gold", which peaked at #1. It was the best-selling album of 1972.

Obscured by Clouds is the seventh studio album by English progressive rock band Pink Floyd, based on their soundtrack for the French film La Vallée, by Barbet Schroeder. Some copies of the album refer to the film by its English title, The Valley. The cover of Obscured by Clouds is an out-of-focus film still of a man in a tree. The lyrics and music tell the story of one's journeys. The album was released in the United Kingdom on 2 June 1972, and a few weeks later in the United States, by Harvest, reaching number 6 and number 46 respectively. A single, "Free Four", was issued in the US only.
