finished watching Coonskin ๐๐๐๐๐
In depicting a parody of racism in America, Ralph Bakshi creates in Coonskin an enjoyably awkward and uncomfortable watch.
Right from the start of the film, one is introduced to characters designed after racist caricatures, immediately followed by an introduction song where a certain slur is especially present, leaving the viewer wondering what in God's name they've gotten themselves into.
However, as the film goes on, one realises that rather than the film being a racist work, the film uses caricatures, stereotypes, slurs, and more in ways that truly showcase the absurdity of racist tropes, the effects racism has on society, the poor treatment America has given black people both historically and in the present day, and more.
While I will say I find the film's depiction of queer people is a tad questionable, Coonskin's social commentary is one that is effective, while also not for the faint of heart.
finished watching The Lost World ๐๐๐๐๐
Incredible film, especially considering how impressive a feat the stop motion, and the incorporation of it alongside scenes of the cast, were for the time.
The Lost World's story is honestly captivating, and makes sense for the time it was released. The plot twists, the comedy, the characters (with the exception of Zambo), all add their own sense of enjoyment to the film, and the animated sequences are all outright fantastic.
Pretty much the only thing that takes away from the film is Zambo's existence as a character in this film, as well as other instances of brownface that unfortunately appear in the background of the film.
finished watching My Big Fat Greek Wedding ๐๐๐๐๐
A fairly average romcom, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, while generally an endearing movie with a fun theme of cultural clashes, lacks a little pizazz with it's story, and doesn't quite send the message one thinks it should be sending.
While one sees the start of the film with it's (relatively average) monologue, and finds themselves thinking that the film is going to have a message about women's traditional gender roles, the progression of that kind of story suddenly flips when "the one" just walks into the main character's life, and from there the story becomes one of "how do we adhere to traditional gender roles if you're the wrong ethnicity?".
One would almost expect this movie to have been written by Gus with how the movie, despite showcasing Greeks as goofy, ends up embracing everything Greek when, from the start of the film and throughout it, Toula makes it clear she doesn't quite fit in with the culture of her family. It gets to the point of being ridiculous with how Ian's parents are shown to be borderline disgusted with Toula's Greek family with interactions that are generally mundane, where only a person who'd want to show how great Greeks are (such as Gus), would include such over-the-top reactions.
The movie borderline has no conflicts, which admittedly makes it a bit unexciting to watch. Any conflicts are minor, immediately move on, and generally end with capitulation to Toula's family in order to make them feel better despite her best interests. Whereas the start of the movie showcases Toula as a perfect candidate to stand up to her family to live the life she wants, the film instead gives Toula the injustice of making her weak, unable to stand up for herself, and ultimately conforming to the life she rolled her eyes to at the film's start.
Generally the movie is fine, and people who like a generic romcom experience will enjoy this as the comedy in the movie is generally pretty good, however the plot direction and what this movie *could have* been frustrates me too much to give it a higher rating.
finished watching Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey ๐๐๐๐๐
This movie had the potential to land in "so bad it's good" territory, but fumbled the ball hard when it came to achieving that status.
Getting first thing out of the way, this was clearly a grab at an opportunity to use characters that had newly entered the public domain and twist them into something new. One can honestly appreciate the fact that among the first and most notable works utilising Winnie the Pooh after becoming public domain was this film, which took a whole new approach to the story as a whole.
In fact, the introductory story was something that was, in my opinion, clever, and had a lot of potential. The work put into the sequences for the backstory were honestly impressive, and honestly lifts up one's expectations for what to expect of the rest of movie...
...which unfortunately becomes a massive disappointment. Any meaningful character development is purely left at that, and none of the other characters that the movie introduces become characters that one can have any meaningful relation or connection to. In short, every character in the movie serves zero purpose other than to be a victim of a massacre, and while I understand this *is* a slasher film, having just about nothing for viewers to relate to the characters on takes away from the impact of their deaths.
Certain scenes are laughable purely in their absurdness and poor acting, and while one wants to give more leeway to a film that at points doesn't seem to take itself seriously, the ending of the film leaves the mind boggled as to what the point of anything in the movie was, and honestly comes off as gratuitous both in the moment, the lead up in the moment, and honestly throughout the entire film.
This disappointment of this watch lands especially hard on the viewer because one can see the *potential* of the movie with it's interesting backstory and concept, quality animated scenes, and honestly some surprisingly good cinematography at points. However the lack of anything meaningful or truly coherent, sprinkled with a pinch of some potentially misogynistic undertones, leaves one thinking the honeypot they reached into was empty.
What a shame.
finished watching Attack of the Giant Leeches ๐๐๐๐๐
An alright creature feature, nothing too special.
Very typical creature feature plot, which is to say it's alright, but nothing that stands out. The acting could have been better, but not a whole lot stands out.
finished watching The Day ๐๐๐๐๐
The story, dialogue, and characters are as full of colour as the cinematography itself, which is to say there is none.
No explanation as to what created the world in The Day, dialogue composed mostly of empty words and curses, when the dialogue does have meaning it jumps to conclusions most of the time, scenes are drawn out way too long for things that add nothing to an already nonsensical plot, and to add a cherry on top, there are *no* likable characters, meaning you're just watching the story of a bunch of people who make you wish that you were the one who was first to die in this watching experience.
All around terrible, heavily recommend you skip if you're considering watching this film.
finished watching The Cat in the Hat ๐๐๐๐๐
(Saw a pre-screening November 2nd, 2026)
Despite some flaws, The Cat in the Hat is a movie that's a fantastic movie for parents to see with their kids. For everyone else? Your mileage may vary.
Right out of the box, the movie's visuals are, in my opinion, something quite enjoyable. The Cat in the Hat, is a character that's wonderfully eccentric and full of life, the world of Dr. Seuss is lively and something very true to that of the books in terms of setting and characters, and the initial conflict very much reflects a situation the original Cat in the Hat would likely find himself in.
The characters are fun and likable from the get go, are relatable once the viewer is introduced to the characters of the real world, and the general goofiness of the movie's start is sure to hook young audiences.
From there, the story admittedly becomes a bit predictable and a little run-of-the-mill. However, where the film falters with it's story, it makes up for it in it's visuals, chaotic and imaginative events, it's child-friendly humour, and surprising deviation from a typical Dr. Seuss story.
While the film is overall pretty decent, a few minor issues dock it a few points. Putting aside the aforementioned plot issue, the movie overall feels less targeted for families, and more targeted to kids specifically, which, while great for parents and kids, takes a little away from the average person's watching experience. Certain soundtrack choices are...interesting, and the potty humour, while nothing too egregious, comes too often for some tastes.
All and all, if you're a parent, absolutely take your kid to see this movie they're sure to love it. Otherwise, it's a fairly lukewarm watch in my personal opinion.
P.S. - Thing 1's design is absolutely adorable, and I fear I might be starting my "Minions Mom" phase.
finished watching Lesbian Space Princess ๐๐๐๐๐
Decided I was interested in watching this after seeing online discourse, and while I was expecting a film that was generally mediocre that, at the same time, was too harshly treated, I instead came across a film that blew my expectations out of the water and left a mark on me as something truly endearing.
Lesbian Space Princess' humour is quirky, bizarre, and has an awkwardness that one can only find adorable and comforting. Things that would make people groan when taken on their own actually land much softer when taken in context of the film as a whole, where it's made clear everything is lighthearted and that even general messages it tries to convey are all meant in good fun with light teases rather than anything antagonistic and accusatory.
Every character that plays a major role in the story has their charm from Saira to the Straight White Maliens, Willow to Problematic Ship (clever word play!), and Kiki to Blade, all characters, regardless of their stance in Saira's story, are fun and enjoyable in their own way.
Outside of very minor, personal annoyances with the film, Lesbian Space Princess is generally a fantastic watch for those seeking a cute, comfy, and queer story.
