Douban Goodreads
VERTIGINE DELLA LISTA
——The Tablet

Douban
Liber Novus
Douban

Jeffrey Smart Douban
publishing house: The Beagle Press 2005 - 1
Synopsis
In the story of modern Australian art, Jeffrey Smart stands alone. The vocabulary of his visual language - modern city life, a kind of deadpan realism tinged with a hint of surrealism - is unmistakably of our time, but his sense of composition is devoted to the most rigorous and eloquent standards of the High Renaissance and the works of such artists as Piero della Francesca. This catalogue is a retrospective of Smart's work over more than four decades, focusing on his most fundamental concerns and interests. Images have been selected for the volume in terms of their composition, in the belief that in this aspect of his work lies the secret to an understanding and appreciation of his importance as an artist.

Douban
Douban
Yves Netzhammer Douban
author: Netzhammer, Yves 绘 publishing house: Hatje Cantz Verlag 2008
Yves Netzhammer’s works for the 52nd Venice Biennial and the exhibition accompanying the documenta 12 in 2007 drew international attention. The artist (*1970 in Schaffhausen) creates complex, disturbing visual worlds that incorporate many references to art history and are permeated with drawing, architecture, computer-generated video images, and sound. People, animals, plants, and objects constantly flow into each other, transforming into new, mysterious creatures. The pleasant dovetails with the unpleasant; the dead melts into the living. According to the artist, he uses his works to look for the images everyone has in his own head, without knowing it. “It’s about the chance an image has in a world ruled by comprehension,” and “searching for the patterns of our perception, for this hidden, parallel system where our desires, fears, prejudices, and ambivalences are concealed.”
Richly illustrated, the book documents Netzhammer’s latest works—the installations for Venice and Kassel, as well as projects for the Museum Rietberg in Zurich and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art—supplemented by earlier works.
Neo Rauch Douban
author: Tinterow, Gary
A retrospective of Rauch's delirious painting
Limited to 1,000 numbered copies, each signed by Neo Rauch. Rife with anachronisms, peopled with seemingly random figures busy doing rather surreal things, and painted in a wide range of muted hues, Neo Rauch's paintings look like Soviet-era illustrations that have shifted into a Lynchian parallel dimension. Set in a variety of industrial locations such as power plants, factories, military buildings, 1950s apartment blocks, and construction sites, the paintings evoke societal ideals somehow gone wrong; the hard-working subjects never seem to be doing anything practical or useful and the disjointed narratives are mind-boggling in their dramatic incoherence. Looking at a Neo Rauch painting, one has the intense urge to psychoanalyze it as if it were one's own bewildering dream.
Born and raised behind the Iron Curtain in Leipzig, Germany, Neo Rauch became fascinated with the late-1970s "Neue Wilde" anti-establishment movement in painting and used it as a departure point for his own work, which soon evolved into his unmistakably unique style. His first solo shows came at about the time of the fall of the Berlin Wall 1989; though it wasn't until 2000 that he began to show outside Germany, international success came quickly and many major solo exhibitions followed. Now that Rauch's work is highly sought after and commands great sums, it is only natural that it should be the subject of a serious and large-scale volume. This massive tome features Rauch's best work so far, with approximately 200 large-scale reproductions, analytical texts by Harald Kunde, a personal portrait by Wolfgang Buscher, and a look at the painter from an international perspective by Gary Tinterow.
Fornasetti Douban
author: Mariuccia Casadio / Barnaba Fornasetti (Editor) publishing house: Rizzoli International Publications 2010 - 10
This elaborate volume, authored by the designer’s son, is a splendid celebration of one of the world’s most inventive design minds. Combining whimsy and elegance, Piero Fornasetti (1913–1988) transformed everyday objects like cups, scarves, and screens into works of art featuring his idiosyncratic leitmotifs, such as the hand, the female face, and luminescent fish. Additionally, he created a wide range of works, including idealized architectural fantasy drawings, book designs, and provocative nudes, as well as the decor for the luxury liner Andrea Doria. Perhaps most famous for dazzling pieces of trompe l’oeil furniture, Fornasetti was rediscovered in the 1980s and has remained much sought-after by collectors worldwide. Featuring 2,800 illustrations, many never before published, the monograph is designed to be an "artist’s book" that reflects as faithfully as possible Fornasetti’s own approach to design. Fornasetti’s work is organized by type and includes paintings, sculptures and etchings, furniture, graphics, textiles, glass, screens, trays, and ceramics, as well as smaller categories. With unique and exhaustive access to the archives, this epic undertaking covers detailed technical, biographical, and bibliographical information, including a list of exhibitions and a register of the complete works. A must-have for collectors and connoisseurs alike.
Lucian Freud on paper Douban
author: Lucian Freud publishing house: Jonathan Cape 2008
Speaking recently about his early years as an artist Lucian Freud claimed, 'I would have thought I did 200 drawings to every painting in those early days. I very much prided myself on my drawing.' Drawing is fundamental to Freud's development as an artist and to how he sees in a way that that it was not, for example, at the foundation of the work of Francis Bacon. Drawing became an important part of Freud's life from the start and a famous sketchbook, "The Freud-Schuster Book", dating back to January 1940 when Freud was in Snowdonia with Stephen Spender, has survived. So too do sketches from Freud's life as a merchant seaman on a cargo vessel in the Atlantic in 1941. His then surreal style lent itself to illustrations and his fascination with animals, birds and fish was revealed in the famous line drawings he produced for Nicholas Moore's book of poems, "The Glass Tower" (1944). "On Paper" charts the works on paper, including the etchings, over his entire career. It includes the formative early work, the sketches in preparation for painting his masterpiece, "Large Interior W11" (after Watteau) (1983), the sketches of the completed painting in the studio and the astonishing later studies of his mother. The book ends with the etchings of recent years. The works on paper are an extraordinary achievement, providing even deeper insights into the work of the greatest figurative artist of our time. The introduction is by Sebastian Smee and essay is by Richard Calvocoressi.

Douban
