Milk and Kisses is an album by Cocteau Twins issued in 1996. It proved their last; a meeting two years later to record a new album ended with the breakup of the band. The song "Rilkean Heart" is a homage to Jeff Buckley, who was a lifelong lover of the work of poet Rainer Maria Rilke. The Asian edition of Milk and Kisses contains two bonus tracks ("Flock Of Soul" and "Primitive Heart") and a version of "Serpentskirt" sung by Elizabeth Fraser with C-pop artist Faye Wong as a duet. Wong later recorded an acoustic version of "Rilkean Heart" in her 1997 album Faye Wong, in which Guthrie and Raymonde also wrote a new song "Yu Le Chang" ("Amusement Park") for her.

This limited edition two-track single, containing a pair of Christmas-themed covers, had a slightly curious origin. The first track, "Frosty the Snowman," was recorded a full year earlier for an issue of a British CD magazine, Volume, as both an acknowledgement that the band was still around and to celebrate the issue's end of year release. Guthrie didn't want a religiously-themed song to reinterpret, that not being his bag in general, thus the choice of a more secular tune. When Snow surfaced in its own right, the group added another non-religious themed standard, "Winter Wonderland," to round things out. Both versions are perfectly enjoyable takes; the Cocteaus lean more towards their sweetly blissful than their powerfully dramatic side for the takes, a choice which suits the bouncy feeling of both songs perfectly. "Frosty" gets the slightly slower take, Fraser's voice happily playing around with the fun lyrics as Guthrie and Raymonde create a fine overall arrangement Cocteaus style. "Winter Wonderland" gets a perkier pace but still has a relaxed, contented glow, Fraser using her higher register to flesh things out. Both tracks have turned up on more widely available Christmas-themed various artist compilations since.

Appearing the same month as its companion release Tiny Dynamine, Echoes maintains the more relaxed-though-still-lush feeling of that EP; if its songs aren't quite as memorable as some of those on Dynamine, they still provide that lovely, unique Cocteau feeling in their performances and arrangements. "Great Spangled Fritillary" adds a touch of dark psychedelia to the proceedings, gong-like chimes and buried feedback drones mixing with the more expected Fraser singing and drum machine loops. "Melonella" has a neat hook by matching the main piano line and Fraser's voice exactly in the verse, one constantly accompanying the other. For the chorus, she steps away for a little more free-form singing against extra guitar. "Pale Clouded White," the EP's best track, reintroduces the slightly ominous, dramatic edge that often characterizes the band's most memorable work. An insistent piano line matches with the bass/drum combination, while Guthrie incorporates both electric and acoustic guitar lines as Fraser sings with understated but strong passion. "Eggs and Their Shells" wraps Echoes up on a softer note, a sweet Fraser vocal and guitar/piano arrangement leading the way.

Otherness

Cocteau Twins genre: Rock

The clever counterpart to the Twinlights EP was its near-exact artistic opposite; while Twinlights showcased stripped-down, acoustic piano-led songs, Otherness was a series of four radical remixes by an outside performer, the first and only time the Cocteaus would let anyone do that. Said performer, Mark Clifford, had come to the Twins' attention leading the group Seefeel, leading to a strong friendship with Guthrie and thus the remix opportunity, with Clifford very much bringing his crisp, haunting electronic style to the proceedings. Two songs from the not yet released Milk and Kisses, "Violaine" and "Seekers Who Are Lovers," were treated here, along with two older songs, Victorialand's "Feet-Like Fins" and Heaven or Las Vegas' "Cherry Coloured Funk." "Feet-Like Fins" understandably gets the strongest makeover, its lush acoustic guitars turned into high-pitched drones and loops over a slow electronic beat as snippets of Fraser float around the mix. The two Milk and Kisses tracks aren't that much more recognizable either. "Seekers Who Are Lovers" keeps distorted shreds of the guitar wash, sampled and given different pitches, over echoing rhythms, Fraser's vocals completely rearranged. "Violaine" preserves her main lyric, interestingly enough, but otherwise the music again favors deep bass and slow pace, with slight hints of guitar and keyboards surfacing in the background. "Cherry Coloured Funk" ends things wonderfully, a sample and loop of the song's guitar and layered vocal passages from Fraser re-imagining the Twins at their most blissful and beautiful.

Experimenting with other producers, the Twins worked with fellow Scot and Associates member Alan Rankine on this three song effort, though not to fully successful effect. Guthrie later groused that Rankine didn't appreciate the band's music to begin with and swore never to hand over production duties again, though the single itself was a notable independent chart success. The title track appeared in both 7" and 12" versions; either way, the song was definitely a bit atypical for the Twins even at that stage, with cleaner guitar, light keyboards and a tight arrangement which sounds more like early Associates than anything else. The 12" mix is all the more unexpected, aiming for the dancefloor in a way which they would never really try again. Fraser's vocals mark it as a Twins song and no other, at least. As for the other two tracks, "Laugh Lines" has Heggie's bass brought up very prominently in the mix and extra live tambourine from Fraser, while the pounding "Hazel" does its job well enough. The EP was also notable as being the last release on which Heggie appeared before splitting to form Lowlife.
