作为与“新中国”同龄“共产党培养最成功的一代”的知青，他们那被国家所决定的命运，和时代在他们身上的烙印，即使在几十年之后，如今在他们的晚年生活中，依然是清晰可寻的。本片所拍摄这群从1963年到1966年支边新疆的十万“上海青年”，由于特定的历史条件和特殊的历史背景，相较于其它知青群体，因其所经受的不一般的磨难，从而使得所谓时代的烙印在他们身上就显得格外的深刻。尤其是在经过回城返沪后三十多年来持续不断的上访维权活动中，他们通过对自身身份的不断地反省和认识，而慢慢体认着他们所代表的这一代人与这个国家之间的关系。
