Fernando Pessoa's paradoxical 1922 short story is styled as a Platonic dialogue between a wealthy banker and his colleague, in which the banker explains the strictly logical path that led him step-by-step from an anarchist youth to being the only true and consistent anarchist. The tale playfully undermines many of the founding texts of political 'enlightenment' (Descartes, Hobbes, Locke, Malthus, Rousseau, Smith, Spinoza), as well as making a devastating critique of revolutionary psychology and of 1917 Bolshevism. Like magic, the sleight of hand is transparent, apparently convincing us of the banker's inexorable logic, while the plot challenges us to discover the flaw in the shocking twist of the wealthy banker's logic.

This movie is more or less a document about a book (Die Stadt ohne Juden) from Hugo Bettauer. As a movie itself it shows the typical problems of a film industry in Vienna in the beginning of the 20's. The legendary Republic of Utopia. Address: Ballhausplatz in Vienna. There is troble. The workers are going out in the streets, the money has lost all its value. In the pubs the people already know the solution: The jews have to be expelled... Die Stadt ohne Juden (The City without Jews) is based on the 1922 novel by Hugo Bettauer. In this novel he dealt with the consequences of the rising antisemitism in a satircial way. It is on a meta level a great pleasure. A lot of very interesting people and locations. In the historical context the movie is one of the most interesting documents we have in the movie history of central Europe. It shows that people had an idea what there future would like to be. The most interesting part is the vision of a Vienna without an important minority. It seems like a vary of stereotypes but its a fact that some visions turned into real.

Proceeding The Cabinet of Dr Caligari by one year, this is both vintage early Lubitsch with its sly slapstick and Rabelaisian humour, and the only work that shares the subliminal, hallucinatory style of German expressionism. He exhibits a blinding array of camera effects, like an astounding shot of a dozen images of mouths in one frame. Also ahead of his time is an opening scene with Lubitsch himself constructing a miniature stage contraption that becomes the film set. A Pirandelloesque concept of art and artifice informs the Hoffman-inspired story about a man who purchases a life-sized doll to stand in for a bride. He gets more than he bargained for - the owner's daughter pretending to be doll! Source: 28th HKIFF
