GAINAX的前身是于1980年代早期成立的Daicon Film，创立时的成员包括庵野秀明、贞本义行、赤井孝美和樋口真嗣。他们的第一个企划是为1981年在大阪举行的第20届日本科幻大会（该届大会又被称为Daicon III）制作开幕动画短片。该短片是关于一个小女孩与早期科幻作品（包括咸蛋超人＝超人力霸王、宇宙战舰大和号、星空奇遇记、星球大战＝星际大战、哥斯拉等）中的怪兽、机器人和太空船等进行战斗，直到她到达一个沙漠平原，并用一杯水浇一颗白萝卜（Daikon）。该棵白萝卜立刻生长成一部巨大的太空船，并把她送走。虽然这个动画短片企划的野心很大，制成品的质素却很粗糙。
