A young gay man, identified as a writer, encounters a local policeman, who arrests him for public cruising in a park. The policeman is more than professionally curious about the young man, who seems to have the cop's number and suddenly kisses him.

Sister Ye lives in a rural village, where everyone makes traditional toys. When Sister Ye's husband dies of an unknown illness, and while Ye is attending to him, her son is kidnapped and sold to a wealthy lady in the city of Shanghai. Shortly after, the village is destroyed during an attack between rival warlords, forcing the villagers move to the city, where they continue to make toys. Ten years pass, and Ye's daughter Zhu'er has become a toy designer. While helping the Nationalist army at the rear, Zhu'er is killed in an attack by the Japanese. On New Year's Eve, Sister Ye is dressed in rags, sitting on the curb, selling toys. A young boy buys toys from her, and it is none other than her son, whom she does not recognize.

三十年代的浙江农村，每到清明时节，家家户户开始养蚕。蚕农老通宝（肖英 饰）借来高利贷买桑叶喂蚕，他非常迷信养蚕的各种禁忌。大儿子阿四（龚家农 饰）生性忠厚。小儿子多多头（郑小秋 饰）却让人不省心，他经常和根生（王徽信 饰）的老婆荷花（艾霞 饰）耍笑，而老通宝认为荷花就是不吉利的人物。她以前做过大户人家丫头，村里人都瞧不起她，而多多头不顾家人和村里人的冷眼，仍愿意和见过世面的荷花在一起。为了报复老通宝，她故意跑进老通宝的蚕房里去“冲克”蚕宝宝。老通宝知道后，心想，这下完了，等着破产吧。但奇怪的是，这一年他家的蚕茧获得了丰收，老通宝百思不得其解，“禁忌”怎么不灵了……

上海某大学女生江玲玉（白杨 饰）寄居在姨母家。抗战爆发后，她不顾家人反对阻止，毅然参加抗日救亡演剧队，到抗战前沿作鼓动宣传。与她同在一起的音乐家高礼彬（陶金 饰）是个热血青年，两人逐渐相爱。演剧队随着战事的发展，辗转来到陪都重庆，表兄周家荣（高正 饰）此时在渝做投机生意并纠缠江玲玉，遭江拒。抗战胜利后，变成“接收大员”的周家荣大发国难财，而结婚后的江玲玉和高礼彬却一贫如洗、捉襟见肘，幸得旧友夏光原（石羽 饰）相助，租了个亭子间栖身。长期的颠沛流离加上营养不良，当教员的礼彬患了肺病，担心国家前途命运的玲玉，不顾身怀有孕，奋笔疾书，揭发“劫收”大员们肮脏的嘴脸，终因体力不支，昏倒街头......

Six young men from the city take jobs building roads for the Chinese Army

1940年代初，浙东某山村的童养媳竺春花（谢芳）因不堪虐待逃入某个越剧戏班，与教戏师傅的女儿邢月红（曹银娣）结为姐妹。不久，攻旦的春花和习生的月红双双成为戏班台柱。 戏班在绍兴演出时，当地豪绅企图凌辱月红，为掩护她，春花被人绑在桥头示众，邢师傅也被打致死，临终前，邢师傅嘱附两人要“认认真真唱戏，清清白白做人”。戏班到上海后很快唱红，戏院唐经理想借上演淫秽剧目捞取更多银子，被春花严词拒绝，但月红却贪慕虚荣堕落成为唐经理的玩物，姐妹因此反目，但两人的情分并没到此终结。

1930's China. The village of a poor family is taken over by the occupying Japanese army. One son, Zhongliang, leaves his wife and young son to join a medic group for the Chinese Army. The other son, Zhangmin goes into hiding to protect his family. The focus shifts back and forth from the brothers' parents and Zhongliang's wife and son to Zhongliang's newfound life of luxury in a town not too far away. The plight of Zhongliang's mother, his wife, Sufan and her son, Kongeson is contrasted with Zhongliang's rise in a flourishing company.

This is the first major work on pre-1949 Chinese cinema in English. As such, it represents a major contribution to existing discussions of both Chinese cinema and national cinema, and is an indispensible basic resource for scholars interested in Chinese film history. The book analyses the wide variety of conceptions of "Chinese national cinema" between the early years of the 20th century and 1949, and contrasts these to conceptions of national cinema in Europe and China. After years of exhausting primary historical research, the author has been able to bring to light sources hitherto not widely available. The author argues that questions and debates about the status and meaning of the "national" in "Chinese national cinema" are central to any consideration of cinema during this period, and addresses the issue of Chinese nationalism as part of a complex history of cinema within the early modern Chinese nation.

In the late 1950s, during China’s Great Leap Forward, Shanghai housewives participated, supported by Dai Mama from the neighbourhood committee. Liu Mama opposed her daughter-in-law Wang Caifeng’s involvement, wanting her to stay home, but her son Liu Genfa supported Caifeng. Zheng Baoqing also opposed his wife Cai Guizhen joining the production group, but Cai ignored him, organised her household, and led the sewing group. Dai Mama helped persuade Zheng Baoqing to change his mind. Lu Afeng joined the sewing group out of fear they would borrow her machine but felt ashamed when they made coats for the children’s welfare home.

The story is about a fisherman's family living near to Shanghai. In the beginning, twin babies are born, a boy and a girl. Their growing-up is briefly sketched, and their friendship with "young master", a boy from rich family about their age.

New Chinese Cinemas analyzes the changing forms and significance of filmmaking in the People's Republic of China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong since the end of the Cultural Revolution, with a particular emphasis on how film comments on the profound social changes that have occurred in East Asia over the past two decades. Considering in detail both conservative and progressive stances on economic modernization, it also demonstrates how film has been an important formal structure and social document in the interpretation of these changes. The essays collected here, which were specially commissioned for this volume, also offer extended analyses of the important trends, styles, and work that define Chinese filmmaking in the 1980s.

The protagonists are mainly Huirong, Zhaobai, and Jikan, who have studied business management in the USA and have returned to their hometown, Shanghai. Huirong and Zhaobai are engaged, and although three of them are close friends, problems arise when they find out that their opinions clash on the matter of what the objective for building a new China should be and what direction it should take.

It is the late 1920s when six-year-old Yingzi and her family move to Beijing. As Yingzi explores the busy streets and alleys, she befriends a widow who, driven mad by grief, stands vigil at the entrance of her hutong, waiting for her missing daughter to return.

Liang is a four-year-old little rebel, possessed of a pair of luminous eyes and a precociously indomitable will. His father deposits him at a well-appointed residential kindergarten in post-1949 Beijing, since his parents are often away. Life at the kindergarten appears rich and colourful, made up of a variety of cheerfully sunny rituals and games meant to train these children to be good members of society.
