Lawrence and the Arabs
Douban
Graves, Robert 1994 - 10
The story of the Middle East in the early 20th century--through the eyes of two of that period's greatest Englishmen--Robert Graves and Lawrence of Arabia. "Brilliant and provocative."--The New York Times Beginning his life-long affair with the Middle East, T.E. Lawrence--Lawrence of Arabia--made his first journey to the region, a four-month walking tour of Syria studying the Crusaders' castles, while still a student at Oxford. He later returned to the area as an archeologist and at the outbreak of World War I was attached to British army intelligence in Egypt. In 1916 he set out on his greatest adventure. With no backing, Lawrence joined Arab forces facing almost insurmountable odds in a rebellion against Turkish domination. His brilliance as a desert war strategist made him a hero among the Arabs, a legendary figure throughout the world, and earned him the moniker Lawrence of Arabia. Lawrence, though, had a near-pathological dislike of publicity and, at the writing of this book, had begun a life of self-imposed obscurity as T.E. Shaw, an anonymous soldier in the RAF. First published in 1927, Robert Graves's biography remains a unique study of T.E. Lawrence. As a close friend (Lawrence had earlier saved the aspiring poet from bankruptcy), Graves was the only biographer to write with Lawrence's permission and cooperation and did so with understanding and insight that enabled him to separate the man from the myth.

The Medievalism of Lawrence of Arabia
Douban
Allen, M. D. 1987 - 6
M. D. Allen's study deals with T. E. Lawrence's lifelong interest in the medieval world, especially medieval literature, and its considerable influence on his view of himself and of the Arabs with whom he fought in an archaic theater of war, and hence his own literary production. The Medievalism of Lawrence of Arabia investigates the influence Lawrence's interest in medieval life and literature had on his attitudes toward life in general and—in content, theme, and diction—on his masterpiece, Seven Pillars of Wisdom, in particular. Allen begins with a brief biography of Lawrence—his early interest in things medieval and his somewhat controversial BA thesis on crusader castles. Allen then reveals the extent to which Lawrence's ideas about honor, warfare, and chivalry in the Arab war against the Turks were shaped by his reading in medieval writings such as Malory's Morte d'Arthur. (Both, as he makes clear, were warrior societies dominated by horses.) Lawrence's reading in the nineteenth-century medievalism is also explored, as in Tennyson's Idylls of the King, and Ruskin's writing on art, where the parallel between Ruskin's ideas on ornament and Lawrence's ideas about the dignity of war is demonstrated. Allen then identifies the medieval and neomedieval texts of Seven Pillars of Wisdom and shows why and to what effect Lawrence borrowed from chivalric, neochivalric, and pseudochivalric works, and sometimes transmogrified them, revealing Lawrence's greatest inspiration to be an English translation of the Moallakat (which is, so to speak, the Arabic Beowulf). Allen sheds new light on many aspects of the influence of medievalism on Lawrence's thought and writing.

The Boy in the Mask里相反,让我觉得他对一些事实视而不见,故意排除掉了另一种可能。

Minorities
Douban
T.E. Lawrence / Jeremy Wilson publishing house: Jonathan Cape 1971 - 11
From the Dust Jacket: "This collection of verse is both an anthology and a very personal reflection of T. E. Lawrence. The components were selected by him, mostly during the crucial period between the Paris Peace Conference of 1919 and his R.A.F. enlistment in 1922, and copied into a small, red leather-bound book that he carried with him almost constantly. The contents of that red, leather-bound book are published for the first time. "The verses contain not only refinements of Lawrence's abiding preoccupations - love, honor, death, hope - but also mark some of the main themes in the important developments in his thinking, such as the post-war disillusion that followed what he regarded as the 'sell-out' of his Arab friends by the British. "Of his choices, Lawrence wrote, 'One necessary qualification was that they should be in a minor key; another that they should sing a little bit.' And by such little bits of singing - these 'minorities' - a little more understanding may also be acquired of a major figure regarded by many as a mystic and a visionary as well as a legendary warrior and an authentic Hero. "Writing to Mrs. Bernard Shaw in 1927, he said he had chosen 'the minor poems I wanted. Some are the small poems of big men; others the better poems of small men'...This presents us with one of those enigmas which T. E. scattered so freely about him, to tease and mystify posterity. He cannot surely have considered Wordsworth, Coleridge, Shelley and Keats as 'small men'; but equally it is impossible to imagine him rating the 'Intimations' ode, 'Kubla Khan,' 'Prometheus Unbound' or the 'Ode to a Nightingale' as 'small poems of big men'...'Minorities' was not intended for publication: but, if it had been, I see no reason to suppose that Lawrence's choice of poems would have been substantially different. Being out of sympathy with those persons who have sought, by diminishing him as a scholar, a writer or a military leader, to cut him down to their own size, I maintain my conviction that he was an exceptional human being, and that anything from his hand deserves our interest and respect." Contents include: Abbreviations; 112 poems such as: Ballad of a Wilful Woman by D. H. Lawrence; Uphill by Rosetti; Hymn to God the Father by Donne; La Belle Dame sans Merci by Keats; To Helen by Poe; Passionate Shepherd to his love by Marlowe; To Marguerite by Arnold; Ode from Intimations of Immortality by Wordsworth; From Youth and Age by Coleridge; Dream Pedlary by Beddoes; From Hellas by Shelley; Faery Song by Yeats; To the Moon by Hardy; Arabia by Walter de la Mare; Forced Music by Graves; Jerusalem by Blake; His Pilgrimage by Sir Walter Raleigh; From Hamlet by Shakespeare; Notes; Indices of authors and first lines.

David Fromkin publishing house: Holt Paperbacks 2001 - 9
Peopled with larger-than-life figures such as Winston Churchill (around whom the story is structured), General Kitchener and T.E. Lawrence, Gertrude Bell, Attaturk, Emir Feisal and Lloyd George the book describes the showdown with the Ottoman Empire which erupted into the devastating Eastern campaign of World War I and led to the formation - by bureaucracy and subterfuge by Americans and Europeans - of the states known collectively as the Middle East. The years 1914-1922 were the creative, formative years when everything seemed possible, but the events of 1922, the pivotal year, set the course for a future of endless wars and acts of terrorism that became the legacy of this period. Issues such as The Allenby Declaration establishing nominal independence for Egypt, the Palestine Mandate and the Churchill White Paper (from which Israel and Jordan sprang), the installing of Hashemite leaders of predominantly Shi'ite teritories, new leaders for Egypt and Iraq, the Russian declaration of a Soviet Union intent on re-establishing her rule over Moslem Central Asia - David Fromkin shows how all these changed the Middle East (and Europe) forever.

The Last Days of T.E. Lawrence
Douban
Paul Marriott / Yvonne Argent publishing house: Sussex Academic Press 1999 - 6
THE LAST DAYS OF T.E. LAWRENCE is a chronicle of the time from when Lawrence of Arabia left the RAF up to his fateful motorcycle accident on 13 May 1935. Much of the story is told in Lawrence's own words, from diaries and letters. It covers his time at Clouds Hill, the picturesque cottage in Dorset, where Lawrence intended to retire. The title of the book is taken from "Leaves in the Wind", Lawrence's last and unpublished writing project. The book reveals his state of mind as he prepared to leave the airforce. Travelling on his Brough Superior motorcycle along a narrow Dorset lane, Lawrence collided with two push-bikes. An official witness told of Lawrence travelling fast, and swerving to avoid a black car coming the opposite direction. This book painstakingly fits together all the evidence to determine the truth of the motorcycle crash that led to the death of Lawrence of Arabia. for the first time a detailed record is set down covering the last six days before the accident.

Lawrence After Arabia
Douban
Howard Brenton publishing house: Nick Hern Books 2016 - 4
August, 1922. The most famous man in England has vanished without a trace: T.E. Lawrence has completely disappeared. But in the idyllic calm of the village of Ayot St Lawrence, on the top floor of the home of Mr and Mrs Bernard Shaw, the 'uncrowned King of Arabia' is hiding - with slabs of homemade carrot cake for comfort. Wearied by his romanticised persona and worldwide fame, disgusted with his country and himself, Lawrence is craving normality. But when you're a brilliant archaeologist, scholar, linguist, writer and diplomat - as well as a legendary desert warrior - how can you ever be normal? And beyond the Shaws' garden wall, nobody cares how he feels: England just wants its hero back. Can he ever return? Howard Brenton's new play, commissioned to mark the centenary of the start of the Arab revolt, finds Lawrence trapped in his love/hate relationship with the limelight, tormented by ghosts and haunted by broken promises. Lawrence After Arabia premiered at Hampstead Theatre in April 2016.

"There was no patriotism in the trenches. It was too remote a sentiment, and rejected as fit only for civilians. A new arrival who talked patriotism would soon be told to cut it out. As Blighty, Great Britain was a quiet, easy place to get back to out of the present foreign misery, but as a nation it was nothing." This is the original version of Robert Graves's intense memoir of the First World War, restoring this raw, emotionally truthful, darkly comic work to the way it was first written, by a young man still reeling from the trenches. 'We see the dark heart of the book even more clearly, and hear it beating even more loudly, in this original edition than we do in the comparatively careful and considered terms of the later one' Andrew Motion 'One of the most candid self-portraits, warts and all, ever painted' TLS

Salvation comes from within a nation...So long as she permits outsiders to teach or preach in her boundaries, so surely is she an inferior nation. People can take from one another, but cannot give to one another(这里不是指仇外)。阿拉伯国家作用涉及较少。不知是否是因为作者英国人,法国人和犹太复国主义者才特别不堪。

Private Shaw and Public Shaw
Douban
Stanley Weintraub publishing house: George Braziller 1963
In 1922, it would have been hard to find two more celebrated men in England than George Bernard Shaw and - as he was then still known, thanks to a melodramatic travelogue by Lowell Thomas - “Lawrence of Arabia.” The first, of course, was the world’s most successful playwright, pamphleteer and self-publicist. The second had, overnight, become a national hero and already joined Rhodes, Wellington, and Clive of India in the mythology of the British Empire. Shaw was 66, Lawrence was 34, and it was a fallow year for both. Having worn himself out on Back to Methuselah, Shaw felt he was finished as a playwright. Lawrence, after a stint in the Colonial office, had written Seven Pillars of Wisdom, and was about to change his name - first to Ross and then to Shaw - and try, unsuccessfully, to become an anonymous Royal Air Force private. Then one casual afternoon in March, they met; and for the next thirteen years, until Lawrence’s death in 1935, they maintained (with Mrs. Shaw as a third partner) one of the most unusual friendships in literary history.

From Publishers Weekly Although he regarded letter-writing as "a bad habit," Lawrence of Arabia (Thomas Edward Lawrence, 1888-1935) wrote and received thousands of letters. Once he left the Middle East, he led a "comparatively empty" life, so his letters served as a lifeline to the outside world. Even his routine, casual notes were carefully crafted. Unlike the collections of 1938 and 1954, this is unexpurgated, containing many letters previously unavailable even to biographers, addressing correspondents such as E. M. Forster, Noel Coward, Ezra Pound, Augustus John and Charlotte (Mrs. G. B.) Shaw, Lawrence's most trusted epistolary confidant. Also included is much previously unpublished material about Lawrence during WW I, about his sexuality and about his state of mind in the last weeks of his life. Each letter is briefly but carefully annotated; none have been censored, even though Lawrence himself felt that they should not be held up to scrutiny by the public. The book is a major literary work. Copyright 1989 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Berton, Joseph
T.E. Lawrence and the Arab Revolt: An Illustrated Guide provides a compelling photographic overview of the life of Lawrence of Arabia and the Arab Revolt that he helped lead. Many books have been written about Lawrence but this book will provide many rare and unseen photographs to illustrate his role in the revolt and the people who fought with and against him. Using photographs from public archives and private collections, Joseph Berton has assembled an impressive selection of images that will provide an important visual resource for military historians, figure modelers, and Lawrence enthusiasts. Special chapters include unpublished photographs of the Hejaz Armoured Car Battery, the French troops that supported Lawrence and the pilots and planes of the Royal Flying Corps that assisted with the Arab Revolt. Additional information will cover the award of the Al Nahda, presented by the King of the Hejaz to over one hundred officers who had helped in some way in their war against Turkey. Photographs showing actual Arab robes worn by Lawrence, uniforms of Arab and Turkish soldiers and weapons, details of Bedouin clothing, camel saddles and rugs are provided with detailed captions. Photographs taken by Harry Chase, printed from original glass plate negatives, are also shown in amazing detail. Final chapters include a research guide to the major Lawrence collections in public institutions, some words of advice for the Lawrence collector today and information on visiting important Lawrence sites.

Crusader Castles
Douban
T. E. Lawrence publishing house: Oxford University Press USA/Folio Society UK 1989 - 1
A new edition of the classic text on Crusader castles and their relation to the military architecture of the West, written by T. E. Lawrence (of Arabia) while still an undergraduate at Oxford in 1910. At the end of the nineteenth century, it was generally assumed that these castles were the prototype for the massive buildings erected in Northern France and England in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. Lawrence opposed this view: unlike most earlier writers on the subject, he was already familiar with castles in England, Wales, France and Syria as a result of a series of expeditions made on bicycle or foot, culminating in 1909 in a three-and-a-half month walking tour of the Levant. Although his thesis was to guarantee him a first-class degree in Modern History, its impact on scholarship was slower to take effect. The typescript remained virtually unknown until 1936, a year after the author's death, when it appeared in a limited edition of the Golden Cockerel Press. Crusader Castles is now offered to a wider readership. The original text is reproduced without alteration; but a selection of the pencilled notes which Lawrence added to the typescript, in preparation for a revision that was never made, are included as footnotes, together with additional editorial notes and bibliographical details. Lawrence's work is also assessed in the light of seventy-five years of subsequent research, in an introduction prepared by Denys Pringle.
