special episode of Doctor Who

The TARDIS lands in London on Christmas Eve, 1851 and almost immediately the Doctor hears his name being called. When he meets the woman shouting for him she fails to recognise him and continues calling until another man arrives and claims to be the Doctor and acknowledges the woman, Rosita, as his companion. The Doctor then attempts to help the newcomer lasso a man-size dog-like creature which has a cyber-mask, but it drags them both through the upper floor of a warehouse until Rosita cuts the rope, saving them both from plunging through a high window. The newcomer explains he has lost his memory, and the Doctor assumes he is a later incarnation, and follows him to the house of a murdered vicar, where the new Doctor says he is investigating the murder of the vicar and a teacher called Jackson Lake, and that his memory was wiped when he was attacked by the Cybermen. At the house the Doctor finds primitive memory devices called infostamps and says they have been used by the Cybermen because of the lack of technology in 19th century London. Two Cybermen attack the Doctors, but are destroyed when the new Doctor sets off a feedback loop in one of the infostamps, something he said was the cause of his memory loss. The new Doctor takes the Doctor back to his base, in the stables of an Inn, and shows him his TARDIS, a balloon (Tethered Aerial Release, Designed In Style). The Doctor finds another infostamp in the new Doctor's luggage, this one filled with information about him, and concludes that the new Doctor is really Jackson Lake, but his memory has been over-written with details of the Doctor's life by the infostamp, which itself may have been stolen from the Daleks. Lake's memory starts to return, and he remembers his wife being killed and his son being taken. Meanwhile, Mercy Hartigan, a workhouse matron has joined the Cybermen and had them kill the vicar so all the local gentlemen would attend his funeral; she arrives with the Cybermen to select four of them (the rest are killed) so she can have the children in their workhouses (including Lake's son) as a labour force for the Cybermen, who are building a 'CyberKing' to rule Earth. The Doctor is unable to stop the rise of the 200-foot tall CyberKing, which is controlled by a reluctantly-conditioned Miss Hartigan, but rescues the children. He then uses Lake's balloon TARDIS to get up to the CyberKing throne, where Miss Hartigan is held. He breaks her conditioning, and her human anger destroys the Cybermen. The Doctor uses the Cybermen's own time travel device to drag the CyberKing back into the Void, saving London. The danger over, Lake, his memory now returning, hires Rosita as nursemaid for his son and gets to see inside the real TARDIS, before insisting that the Doctor joins them for Christmas dinner.

In a Mars base, the inhabitants are being infected by a mysterious water creature which takes over its victims. The Doctor is thrust into the middle of this catastrophe, knowing a larger one is waiting around the corner.

The main story arc of the series focused on the significance of the character of Clara, whom the Doctor had encountered twice before as Oswin in "Asylum of the Daleks" and as a governess in "The Snowmen". It also features the recurring appearance of the Doctor's enemy, The Great Intelligence.

"Space" Amy is trying to get the Doctor's attention while he fixes the TARDIS. She discovers that Rory is helping the Doctor by installing thermal couplings underneath the glass floor of the TARDIS. Rory and Amy then start a small argument, when the TARDIS suddenly shakes and the lights go out. The Doctor asks Rory if he dropped a thermal coupling, which Rory admits to and apologizes for doing. Amy then apologizes as well, and, at the Doctor's confusion, explains that Rory was looking up her skirt through the glass floor when he dropped the thermal coupling. The Doctor then notes that they have landed through "emergency materialization" which should have landed the TARDIS in the safest space available. The lights come on, revealing another TARDIS inside the control room - the TARDIS has materialized inside itself. The Doctor experimentally walks through the door of the TARDIS inside the control room and instantly walks back into the control room through the door of the outer TARDIS. The Doctor tells Rory and Amy that they are trapped in a "space loop" and that nothing can enter or exit the TARDIS ever again. Despite the Doctor's words, another Amy enters through the TARDIS outer door saying "Okay kids, this is where it gets complicated." "Time" Continuing from the ending of "Space", the other Amy reveals that she is from a few moments in the future, and is able to come into the current outer TARDIS because "the exterior shell of the TARDIS has drifted forwards in time". The other Amy knows what to say and do because, from her perspective, she is repeating what she heard herself say earlier on. The Doctor sends the current Amy into the TARDIS within the current TARDIS, in order to "maintain the timeline". The two Amys take a moment to flirt with each other before the current one departs, much to the Doctor's exasperation. However, not long after the current Amy has left, Rory and Amy enter through the door of outer TARDIS, explaining that the Doctor, from their perspective, just sent them into the inner TARDIS. The current Doctor promptly sends the current Rory and now-current Amy through the inner TARDIS. The Doctor then explains that he will set up a "controlled temporal implosion" in order to "reset the TARDIS", but in order to do so he must know which lever to use on the control panel. Moments after he speaks, another Doctor enters though the outer TARDIS door and tells him to use "the wibbly lever", which he quickly operates, then steps into the inner TARDIS to tell his past self which lever to use. The inner TARDIS dematerialises while the outer TARDIS (being the same TARDIS) does the same, and the Doctor assures Amy and Rory that they are now back in "normal flight", and then advises Amy to "put some trousers on."

It’s the deepest part of winter, the exact midpoint, Christmas Eve – half way out of the dark. Amy and Rory are trapped on a stricken space liner that’s plummeting through banks of thick icy fog to the surface of the planet below. Only one man has the power to save them; only one man is in possession of a machine that can clear the fog and let them land safely. That man is Kazran Sardick, a rich but lonely old miser who rules Sardicktown with a sky-mast of iron. The Doctor’s only chance of rescuing the ship’s 4,000 passengers is to save Kazran’s soul and show him that life is worth living. For this he needs to go back, way back, to when Kazran was a boy with a life full of promise. But can the Doctor put a song in Kazran’s heart and love in his life, in time for Christmas? Can he bring him out of the dark?
