Chick Corea / Stefano Bollani genre: Jazz
release date 2011-09-27 publisher: ECM Records
Pianists Chick Corea and Stefano Bollani can both play a lot of notes fast and have occasional tendencies to grandstand. But if they’re all over each other in the early stages of this Italian concert, later we hear the mutual understanding and assured rhythmic their time together since 2009 has nurtured. A prancing, marching stride-piano feel follows rhapsodic, gradually intensifying Jobim explorations early on. Fats Waller’s Jitterbug Waltz juggles time-patterns, trills, stabs and swing. Bollani’s A Valsa da Paula is quite abstract, and Tirititran develops from handclapping and drumming on the piano through tinkling, stop-start free improv to relaxed traditional grooving that recalls old-time pianists such as Erroll Garner.

Art Blakey / The Jazz Messengers genre: Jazz
release date 1962-05-27 publisher: Blue Note Records
The Freedom Rider is an album by jazz drummer Art Blakey and his group the Jazz Messengers. Continuing Blakey's distinct brand of hard bop, this album features contributions from Wayne Shorter, Lee Morgan, Blakey himself, and Kenny Dorham, a former Jazz Messenger. This was the final album by this particular edition of the Jazz Messengers, who had been together for 18 months, as Lee Morgan left after this album to be replaced by a young Freddie Hubbard. The compositions themselves are varied, with Blakey contributing an energetic drum solo on "The Freedom Rider"; at least three of the compositions on the album are blues pieces. "El Toro" features a solo by Shorter incorporating the sheets of sound technique pioneered by John Coltrane.

Color de Trópico is a carefully-compiled work of healing and reconstruction, documenting a special moment in the history of Venezuelan music, when the country’s democracy was just a few years old and the profound impact of the oil industry on society had only just begun. DJ El Palmas and El Dragón Criollo have chosen eight impossibly hard-to-find jewels, originally released between 1966 and 1978, reissued here for the first time on vinyl. In this period, Venezuelan musicians assimilated a wide range of influences and styles, both local and global, to generate something new, a “modern” identity for Venezuelan music; artists who set their eyes on the future without giving up the search for their own sabor (flavour). This is how jazz, rock, salsa, funk, psych, prog and disco, sat next to guajira, cumbia, cha-cha-cha and even the hugely-popular Venezuelan style of joropo. It started a long tradition of Venezuelan musical pioneers, many of whom are still to get the recognition they deserve. Seconds after the needle drops on the vinyl, “El Despertar” (“The Awakening”) kicks off things with a goodbye for it was the last single Los Darts released before their dissolution in 1974. In the 60s they became the youthful face of pop, however, “El Despertar”... more credits released November 20, 2020 Compiled by El Drágon Criollo & El Palmas Artwork by Georgina Maldera Mastering and cut at The Carvery Studio Picture taken in Caracas, Venezuela in 1966. Walter Wanderley
release date 1966-05-16 publisher: Verve
The notes for this CD ask, "What issue is more topical than the Brazilian rain forest? So what reissue would be more topical than Walter Wanderley's Rain Forest?" Politically, this may be true, but musically, this collection is anything but topical. From the first tune -- the monster hit "Summer Samba," the listener is catapulted straight back to the '60s when bossa nova was new in the U.S. and everyone wanted a piece of it. Organist Wanderley made a big splash with this CD, which went platinum in two years -- and it does evoke strong water images, like "poolside" and "ice skating rink." The jazzmen are underutilized, since most of the tracks are less than three minutes long and leave little room to stretch out. One exception is the pretty Ferreira/Marconiballad "Rain," the only track where Wanderley plays piano rather than organ and which features a fine solo by Urbie Greenon trombone. On "Beach Samba," Greengets to noodle a bit, but Bucky Pizarelliis heard stating the melody and nothing else. Despite all the sadness implied in the song titles, this CD has a jaunty feel to it and will be best enjoyed by nostalgic fans of that bygone era.
