戛纳电影节不对公众开放，于是来参加的4000名记者组成了戛纳的大部分观众。不过，主办方不但不完善放映时间和合理运用所有的放映厅，还把记者们按不同的颜色分为几个类别。证件的颜色代表着看电影前需要排队的时长。手持低级别证件的记者们通常需要在影厅外的烈日下排队数小时，这也造成了额外的工作时间。高级别的证件通常发放给大媒体的记者，相对较短的排队时间并没有减少他们的工作量，因为影展会有更多的活动需要安排他们去报道。
戛纳电影节通过这种等级制度，压榨了所有颜色等级的记者，才得以维持自己世界第一电影节的崇高头衔。但这给很多记者造成了挫败感和羞辱感，而且让不同级别的记者之间产生了分化。
今年已是2018年，这种封建的等级制度不应该再存在，
