Shostakovich: Symphony No. 7-Valery Gergiev
Douban
Rotterdam Hilharmonic Orchestra / Valery Gergiev
release date 2003-05-13 publisher: Philips
Shostakovich's "Leningrad" Symphony has been surrounded by controversy ever since it was written; it even ignited a battle between two great conductors, Toscanini and Stokowski, for the first American performance (Toscanini won). Composed in 1941 during the siege of Leningrad in homage to the Russian people's heroic resistance against the German invaders, it has been condemned by some as political propaganda, hailed by others as a symphonic masterpiece. Time and audiences everywhere have decided in favor of the latter view; today, the "Leningrad" is one of Shostakovich's best known, most popular symphonies. Though its programmatic content is clear, the emotional impact of the music itself invites listeners to imagine their own scenario. Gergiev has this music in his bloodstream and knows how to inspire an orchestra (two in this case); exploiting every instrumental resource, he elicits both massive and delicate playing, achieving powerful build-ups and tremendous climaxes. The result is a taut, concentrated performance that makes the symphony--Shostakovich's longest--seem shorter than usual; its no-holds-barred approach plumbs the depths and scales the heights of human experience, from bleak, grotesque irony to heart-breaking, anguished lamentation and ultimate triumph. The famous first movement march--a simple, deliberately trite little tune over a persistent snare drum figure--starts almost inaudibly; its eleven always different repetitions generate enormous suspense, and when the cumulative orchestration reaches its peak, you feel as if an entire army had marched over you. The recording's only flaw is its excessive dynamic contrast, so keep a finger on the volume control. --Edith Eisler

A magnificent collection of new tracks by Pawn, with collaborations with Danny Norbury, Cuushe, Josh Varnedore, The Lullaby League, Solo Andata, Moshimoss, Konntinent, and Geskia! With these illuminating and entrancing compositions of found sound, glass harp, electronics, this 4th full-length album stands out as a classic of Japanese experimental ambient. … When Tone Sketch was released last October, it bumped Glimmer of Sunlight straight to 2012. This turns out to have been a smart decision, as the two releases might otherwise have competed against each other. The earlier album was more vocal-centric; Glimmer of Sunlight only contains vocals on the opening track. Pawn (Hideki Umezawa) has a habit of releasing albums that are half new, half remix. The advantage of this approach is that listeners can decide which versions they like better and create their own playlists. The risk is that those who listen all the way through may feel they have just played the same album twice. Thankfully, there’s enough variety here to prevent that from happening. The best mixes preserve all that is great about Pawn – the bell tones and xylophones that have intrigued listeners ever since Glass + Breath. But the artists who impose their own sounds help the album to be more well rounded. For this reason, Solo Andata‘s ambient take on “A Thousand Cups of Coffee and Despair” is effective in context, even though it pales next to the original. And while Cuushe may be upset to find her vocals excised on the remix of “We are Alone Until the End of the World”, her absence allows the other guest star, Danny Norbury, to shine more brightly. For a while, múm was the go-to reference band for music box music. If an album contained the sound of a music box, twee vocals, or both, the Icelandic collective always seemed to get mentioned. But múm has changed its sound so frequently that comparisons now need a time stamp in order to be valid. Pawn is the new old múm, as tracks such as “A Thousand Cups of Coffee and Despair” and “Sketch of a Wooden Hand Orgel” hearken back to Loksins erum við engin in their sense of playfulness and childlike wonder. Listening to these pieces is like listening to the sound of an infant’s mobile above a crib, and hearing the infant coo in response. But Glimmer of Sunlight also shares with Loksins erum við engin a spectrum of sound ranging from the folk-tinged (the title track) to the drone (“I Colored the Arctic White”). Pawn has expanded his horizons, adding much more than a glimmer of sunlight to his future; his new album is like a full-fledged sunrise. (Richard Allen) Listen & Buy:

Mr Shakespeare (Jason Watkins) and Oakmore are back as well, hoping to win the competition. Mr Peterson ends up taking his class (as well as a donkey) on an unauthorised school trip to the competition's location at Christmas Castle, but they become lost, and embark on an epic trip across the country, travelling by any means necessary. Mr Peterson must use all his resources and do whatever he can to guide his pupils to safety and reach Christmas Castle, if they are to win the competition.
