Gank move
release date 1994-10-08 publisher: underground
Late 1994, a hardly known duo, Detriot's Gank Move deliver a sick, trill gangster rap album that is so hardly spoken of, it sickens me. The lyrics aren't groundbreaking, but it is a dope gangsta rap album with very good beats. Gank Move handles the whole production which draws upon sparse drums and G-Funk melody. "Real N---az & O.G.'s" is a laidback G-Funk classic with slick whiny keyboards perfect for the sunny top-down ride. This joint may remind some of Warren G's melody but with a sparse beat pattern. The video version is "Real Playaz & O.G.'s," and the video is cool; check for it on You Tube. "Trigga Man," like most of the rest has a more gangsta mentality. The beat has a neat bump to it. "Be Alright" has a similar vibe to "Real N---az & O.G.'s." "Hustlers" has another sunny beat to it and a slick whiny synth, and they drop some no holds barred street philosophy and dope flows. They get heated in "F--- You" and drop some warnings to the haters. The beat is an old funk sample and has a more menacing vibe than the sunny G-Funk on the others. They even have a "dedication" for the dopefiends in the directly titled "For The Fiends." The beat is twangy and sick, and they again drop some gritty imagery. If you like harsh midwestern rap, and good G-Funk beats, this album will not dissapoint. Fans of Dayton Family and similar acts will definitely dig this one.

Mc Eiht genre: Hip Hop
release date 1999-06-08 publisher: Priority
By the time MC Eiht released Section 8 in 1999, he was five years removed from the success of his chart-topping We Come Strapped album and clearly struggling to revive that success. He'd slipped big-time with Last Man Standing (1997), his final album for Epic Street. In the wake of that album's disappointment and his departure from Epic, he hooked up with Mack 10, who had a boutique label aligned with Priority, Hoo Bangin' Records. Under Mack 10's guidance, MC Eiht went back to the basics for Section 8, and it resulted in his most accomplished album to date. There are a number of standout songs here, including "My Life," a laid-back slow jam that revisits the "la-la-la" vibe of "All for the Money." Other highlights include "Automatic," which boasts a strong Fredwreck Nassar production, and "Days of 89'," a heartfelt collaboration with longtime producer DJ Slip. Granted, Section 8 is spotty, with a few bland tracks sequenced toward the end — then again, most gangsta rap albums are — but it's still a vast improvement over Last Man Standing. Moreover, the variety of production styles and the reinvigorated rhymes of MC Eiht make Section 8 more interesting than either We Come Strapped (1994) or Death Threatz (1996), which are both solid albums yet rather same-sounding from track to track. Above all, though, it's nice to hear MC Eiht once again enthused about rapping. In fact, this is as lively as he'd sounded since his prime years with Compton's Most Wanted.

We Come Strapped

MC Eiht Featuring CMW genre: Hip Hop
release date 1994-07-19 publisher: Sony
We Come Strapped is the debut album by the gangsta rapper MC Eiht, released July 19, 1994 on Epic Street. It was produced by MC Eiht and DJ Slip of Compton’s Most Wanted. The album features guest performances by Spice 1 and Redman. Along with singles, music videos were produced for the songs, “All for the Money” and “Geez Make the Hood Go Round” The lyrical content of the album gained MC Eiht the “Double-Sticker” on the front cover of the LP. The sticker read “The lyrical content on this album solely expressed the views of the artist”. This is also the album where he begins to produce, hense forming “EIHTHYPE Productions” with himself, long-time beat-maker DJ Slip, with William Zimmerman, “Willie Z”, on the keyboard. We Come Strapped has a lot of dark-beats, but all the beats on the album have a funky rhythm, especially the hit single “All For The Money” with its funky guitar riff in the back ground, as Eiht’s lyrics portray the life of a kid from the streets doing whatever he can to survive. DJ Mike-T does some scratching on the album as well, bringing back the feeling of the old CMW albums. There are “endoludes” on this album, which are basically interludes, showing off some instrumentals that EIHTHYPE Productions have done. This album was also released at the height of Eiht’s feud with DJ Quik, and Eiht throws more than a few insults on the track “Def-Wish III”. It has been MC Eiht’s most successful album to date.

Mac & A.K.
release date 1996-01-01 publisher: Street Life / E&K Music Group
This is the underground classic EP release that introduced Mac & A.K. to the game. The album was originally released by Mac & A.K. independently in 1996. This album garnered Mac & A.K. rave reviews from many hip hop publications such as Rap Sheet, Rap Pages, Murder Dog, Ill Tip, The Loop and many others. This album was so hot at the time, it afforded Mac & A.K. the oppurtunity to do shows from Cali, to New York, to Atlanta, to New Orleans, to Miami and back. They were already signed to Tommy Boy Records when this EP was allowed to hit the streets which is very rare. Tommy Boy allowed them to eat independently while they finished up their debut Tommy Boy releases entitled "Drastic Measures Vol. 1 and Vol. 2". Neither album was released as Mac & A.K. chose to leave the label to pursue other avenues such as creating their own label to release their Hot brand of West Coast funk.
