Laura Marling genre: Folk
release date 2010-03-22 publisher: EMI
Special two disc (CD + NTSC/Region 0 DVD) edition housed in special box which includes a DVD that contains a 45 minute behind the scenes documentary, incorporating footage from the 'Laura Marling & Friends' show at the Royal Festival Hall in London last summer. 2010 sophomore album from the British singer/songwriter. I Speak Because I Can is Laura Marling's coming of age album, its 10 songs imbued with a new richness, ripeness and sophistication. It is also an album marked by its quintessential Englishness. For all its American instrumentation, its shades of Crosby Stills and Nash, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Leonard Cohen, its American producer, these songs are no pale Americana interpretation; rather they are tales deeply rooted in England.

release date 2010-05-18 publisher: Bad Boy
Janelle Monae, "The ArchAndroid" (Bad Boy/Atlantic Records) Janelle Monae, who draws some of her inspirations from Fritz Lang's classic sci-fi movie "Metropolis," likes to play up a robotic image — but the singer is far from programmed. "The ArchAndroid," Monae's first full-length album, is the follow-up to her brilliantly crafted EP, "Metropolis, Suite I: The Chase"; "ArchAndroid" includes the second and third suites of her futuristic saga. The adventure kicks off with the melodramatic, theatrical opener "Suite II Overture." And what's next is undeniably one of the year's best tracks: "Dance or Die," a Fela-flavored jam with super swag. The song's title seems to be the 24-year-old's motto for life. Monae continues her psychedelic momentum with the addictive "Faster" and "Locked Inside," a song with a doo-wop groove. Monae's voice is wonderfully flexible, and adapts according to the track. She sounds playful on "Tightrope," powerful "Oh, Maker" and laid-back on "Neon Valley Street." And her vocals are enhanced by the amazing sounds of the Wondaland ArchOrchestra. The disc has a range of influences, from Stevie Wonder to Walt Disney to David Bowie. There are odd ones too: She says "Cold War," a mechanical groove with an in-your-face beat, was partly inspired by Muhammad Ali's fists, while the distorted "Mushrooms & Roses" drew insight from a stage dive at Bonnaroo. The only issue with "ArchAndroid" is that there may be too much going on. "The Chase," which included the masterful, Grammy-nominated tune "Many Moons," ran five tracks long (it was later rereleased with two additional songs). It was short and sweet, and kept listeners yearning for more. "ArchAndroid," which clocks in at 108 minutes, is simply too long. Despite that, Monae still delivers something extraordinary, different and heroic. CHECK THIS TRACK OUT: Monae's hyperactive flow on "Dance or Die," which features poet-actor Saul Williams, is top-notch. In a music world desperately missing the multitalented Lauryn Hill, Monae may be its savior.

Faust Is Last
Douban
Faust genre: Pop
release date 2010-04-27 publisher: Klangbad
If faust announce a last record after 40 years then it might be a good idea to open up the ears, especially when the cover art is one big reference to their first record. The x-rayed "fist" appears again, this time with the fingers slightly more opened. 40 years lie between the two records. 40 years of many different line ups, record companies, financial disasters, artistic failures and successes. Whatever can happen to a band has happened to Faust. In that sense they are not an unusual group of musicians. What is unusual is that each project, each record, each concert over the last 40 years has been different. On the very first record they made clear (on clear vinyl) that they were in it for destruction. "All you need is love" and "Satisfaction" symbolically were set fire to. That same fire you will hear on this new & last Faust record. The circle will be closed by more circular music. A music that seems to come out of nowhere, sonic descriptions rather than songs. Timeless and not rooted in specific places and/or traditions. Maybe influenced by Cage's idea of chance, Dada, cut-ups, Sun Ra's free jazz organ playing and the second attempt after the German-American Monks to represent "a rock group as total artwork". faust in 1970 and in 2010 sound aggressive and 100 percent oriented towards the future. There is not a glimpse of nostalgia in "Faust is last". Turn up the volume and listen to this first, new and last Faust record very loud!
Pattern & Grid World

Flying Lotus genre: Electronic
release date 2010-09-20 publisher: Warp
2010 EP release from producer/musician Steven Ellison (AKA Flying Lotus). While the album Cosmogramma was high in concept and wide in musical collaboration, Pattern + Grid World pulls the focus back to Steven Ellison and his machines. These machines are speaking from the go, as "Clay" introduces itself in a fog of synth and vocoder and gives way to one of the many surprises here, the schizophrenic ping-ponging electro of "Kill Your Co-Workers". Drenched in alternating melodies, it's a synthetic counterpart to the grand string and harp arrangements of Cosmogramma, making acclaimed illustrator Theo Ellsworth's subtly psychedelic cover image of vision-through-noise all the more intimate.

M.I.A
release date 2010-07-13 publisher: Hostess Japan/Zoom
British musician M.I.A. (Mathangi "Maya" Arulpragasam) had released her second album Kala in 2007, which achieved widespread critical acclaim and was certified Gold in the United States and Silver in the United Kingdom. She toured in support of the album under the People Vs. Money Tour banner, during which she composed and recorded some music with her Korg Kaossilator atop the pyramids of Mexico. Tourmate Egyptian Lover stated he was ready to collaborate on her third album. She then collaborated with A. R. Rahman on the soundtrack of the film Slumdog Millionaire, receiving an Oscar nomination for the track "O...Saya", before giving birth to her son Ikyhd in February 2009. British producer Rusko was one of M.I.A.'s collaborators on the album. Six months after her son's birth, she began composing and recording her third studio album in Los Angeles, where she had bought a house with partner Ben Bronfman. Collaborators such as Rusko and Blaqstarr moved into the house to write and record songs for the new project, before she mixed the record with them in a rented studio in Hawaii. She collaborated with writer/producer Blaqstarr because "he simply makes good music." Producer Diplo worked on the track "Tell Me Why", but at a studio in Santa Monica rather than at the house. He claimed in an interview that, following the break-up of his personal relationship with M.I.A. some years earlier, he was not allowed to visit the house because "her boyfriend really hates me". Tracks for the album were whittled down from thirty-hour jam sessions. Producer Rusko, who played guitar and piano on the album, described the pair getting "carried away" in the studio, appreciating the "mad distorted and hectic" sound they were able to create. Rusko stated "She’s got a kid, a little one year old baby, and we recorded his heart beat. We’d just think of crazy ideas”. Rusko has described M.I.A. as the best artist he'd ever worked with, stating "She's been the most creative and I really had a good time making music with her".
