2011 release, a collaboration with modern Lounge lizards Pink Martini and Japanese Easy Listening/Pop vocalist Saori Yuki. Saori released her debut album in Japan in 1969 and has gone on to record over 30 albums in her 42 years. Yuki discovered Pink Martini after the band covered her song 'Taya Tan' for their 2007 album Hey Eugene! Most recently, she sang a verse of 'Silent Night' in Japanese for the band's hit 2010 holiday album Joy To The World. In honor of the year of her debut release, Saori Yuki partnered with Pink Martini and producer Thomas M. Lauderdale to create a loving tribute to the music released in 1969. Featuring Japanese pop hits alongside internationally recognized tunes like Jorge Ben's 'Mas que nada' and 'Puff the Magic Dragon, 1969 is a brilliant collaboration featuring Thomas M.Lauderdale's magical arrangements, Pink Martini's stellar musicianship, and Saori Yuki's soaring vocals.

Je dis oui! is the upcoming album by Pink Martini, scheduled to be released by Heinz Records on November 18, 2016. Guests vocalists include Ari Shapiro, Ikram Goldman, Kathleen Saadat, and Rufus Wainwright. The album was recorded at Kung Fu Bakery and B-Side Studios in Portland, Oregon. It was produced by Thomas Lauderdale and Kyle Mustain, and engineered by Dave Friedlander and Steve Sundholm.

Lady in Satin is an album by jazz singer Billie Holiday released in 1958 on Columbia Records, catalogue CL 1157 in mono and CS 8048 in stereo. It is the next to final album completed by the singer and released in her lifetime (Her final album, "Billie Holiday" being recorded in March 1959 and released just after her death). The original album was produced by Irving Townsend, and engineered by Fred Plaut. The song material for Lady in Satin derived from the usual sources for Holiday in her three decade career, that of the Great American Songbook of classic pop. Unlike the bulk of Holiday's recordings, rather than in the setting of a jazz combo Holiday returns to the backdrop of full orchestral arrangements as done during her Decca years, this time in the contemporary vein of Frank Sinatra or Ella Fitzgerald on her Songbooks series. The album consists of songs Holiday had never recorded before. The arrangements were by bandleader Ray Ellis, Holiday familiar with his Ellis in Wonderland album. Soloists on the album included Mel Davis, Urbie Green, and bebop trombone pioneer J.J. Johnson. The song "The End of a Love Affair" did not appear on the stereo release, CS 8048, the final track of side two being "I'll Be Around."

It is not just the timbre of Norah Jones's voice that is mature beyond her 22 years. Her assured phrasing and precise time are more often found in older singers as well. She is instantly recognizable, blending shades of Billie Holiday and Nina Simone without sounding like anyone but herself. Any way you slice it, she is a singer to be reckoned with. Her readings of the Hank Williams classic "Cold Cold Heart" and Hoagy Carmichael's "The Nearness of You" alone are worth the price of the CD. Jones's own material, while not bad, pales a bit next to such masterpieces. They might have fared better had she and producer Arif Mardin opted for some livelier arrangements, taking better advantage of brilliant sidemen such as Bill Frisell, Kevin Breit, and Brian Blade; or if the tunes had simply been given less laconic performances. Jones has all the tools; what will come with experience and some careful listening to artists like J.J. Cale and Shirley Horn is the knack of remaining low-key without sounding sleepy--sometimes less is not, in fact, more. --Michael Ross
