在欧洲到处晃荡了一年，不知怎么搞的心里老有股歉意――因为这趟旅行不是自费的关系吧。
日本文化厅每年都有所谓的艺术家海外派遣研修计划，这次的独自旅行费用就是由该计划提供。对于此行能有多少收获，说实在的并没啥把握，所以心中老记挂着自己在花纳税人的钱。结果是歌剧、芭蕾、戏剧、电视、电影等研修项目之外，其他各方面我也兴趣盎然。因为感到好奇的事物实在太多了，最后这趟旅行反而成了名副其实的“河童之旅”。
原本打算随兴地见识欧洲事物、多和当地人接触，但是到了之后，我才深深觉得对他们的认识实在是少得离谱。
像当地人觉得理所当然的事物，我不是大吃一惊，就好像是有什么新发现一样。
风俗习惯不问，当然思想、意识与精神的结构也就相异，对于这样的差别会有兴趣是很自然的事，但是连饭店房间也成了我观察的对象。此外，从街头种种事物、国际列车的乘务员如何因国家而异、各地民宅的窗户和当地气候风土的关联性以及从南到北有什么样的变化、因时代和地区而有所改变，又有什么样的特征……真的是连对各国垃圾都感兴趣。简直可以说是破铜烂铁的大搜集。
沿途我不时地记笔记或者画素描。
返国后算算，总共走了近20个国家。朋友根据笔记上的记录，统计我住过的旅馆房间数后说：“有100多间喔！”敢情这数目是大了些，倒叫我有点不好意思。研修旅行的结果不敢说是好是坏，但就我个人来讲，能有机会体验非到当地不能了解的事物，真是心存感谢。
