But it wouldn't surprise me too much." - STEREO REVIEW , 1980 The second album by John Lydon's post-Sex Pistols outing Public Image Ltd. was originally released in the UK in 1979 in a limited edition film canister-style metal box containing three 12" 45s. Some copies managed to float across the Atlantic into the hands of a fortunate few, making it a post-punk collectors' holy grail. Unavailable for almost thirty years, the Metal Box is back as an exact replica of the original, remastered for better sound than the 1979 vinyl! In Lydon's own words: "Metal Box was hard work. First, Virgin weren't very sure about the metal package, you know, cost, blah blah blah. So we offered to pay for some of it by reducing our advance from them. Obviously the idea of putting a record in a metal box was a bit unusual. The idea came from film canisters. We all thought video and film was the future. Besides, I've always collected vinyl and this was a really good way of stopping it getting damaged."

After a string of international hits, ABBA had polished its trademark Eurodisco-cum-American pop sound to an almost blinding sheen. <i>Voulez-Vous</i> (1979) represents some of the last creative gleanings in this direction; subsequent releases by the Swedish foursome would betray more of a modern rock influence. If the formula is familiar here, it still delivers an exhilarating rush on tracks like “Angeleyes,” “Does Your Mother Know?” and “Kisses Of Fire.” A few unexpected twists are thrown in, like the sitar-like synths on “I Have A Dream” and the classical embellishments in “As Good As New.” Along with the breathlessly upbeat tunes are two standout midtempo numbers, the Spanish-flavored “Chiquitita” and the lightly-funky “If It Wasn’t For The Nights.” Agnetha and Frida achieve their typically delectable vocal blend, while Bjorn and Benny reaffirm their stature as pop master-craftsmen. <i>Voulez-Vous</i> has a certain over-ripeness to it, a sense that fresher ideas would be needed for the next project. But for those with an appetite for ABBA’s irresistible hooks and scintillating harmonies, this album is more than satisfying.

A great album of soulful jazzy tracks -- featuring vocals by Japanese singer Kimiko Kasai, and keyboards from Herbie Hancock and Webster Lewis. Kimiko sings in English, and the record's got some great versions of Herbie Hancock tunes -- including "Maiden Voyage", "Sunlight", "Butterfly", "Tell Me A Bedtime Story", and "Harvest Time". Also features a nice version of Stevie Wonder's "As", and the track "Head In The Clouds". The record's got a nice smooth fusion groove -- post Headhunters, almost in Herbie's late 70s mode for the US, but better!

ABBA: The Album (also known as simply The Album) is the fifth studio album by the Swedish pop group ABBA. It was released in Scandinavia on 12 December 1977 through Polar Music, but due to the massive pre-orders the UK pressing plants were not able to press sufficient copies before Christmas 1977 and so it was not released in the UK until January 1978. The album was released in conjunction with ABBA: The Movie, with several of the songs featured in the film. Altogether the album contained nine songs.

Although Lalo Schifrin is justifiably praised for his soundtrack work, many jazz purists turn up their noses at his jazz dates, such as his '60s work with Jimmy Smith and Wes Montgomery. The things that make Schifrin an anathema to the diehards -- the huge orchestras, the pop and soul riffs, the general air of over the top theatricality -- are all over 1977's Free Ride, his reunion date with Dizzy Gillespie. (Schifrin had been Gillespie's arranger in the late '50s.) In fact, Free Ride is so painfully dated that it's transformed into cockeyed cool, just the sort of record ironic hipsters should listen to while they're reading the novelizations of '70s cop shows that they bought for a bundle off of eBay. Gillespie plays with his usual wit and panache, but most of the time, he sounds like a sideman on his own album; the real focus of Schifrin's arrangements is the funky wah-wah guitars and ARP synthesizer solos that take center stage on tracks like "Fire Dance" (which sounds exactly like it should be the theme for a Charlie's Angels spinoff) and the mellow disco of the closing "Last Stroke of Midnight." Occasionally, Gillespie gets to break out on his own album, with the lovely solo on "Love Poem for Donna" his particular standout. For what it is, Free Ride is really quite good (guests include Lee Ritenour and future star Ray Parker, Jr.), but it's very much a record of and for its time.

Secret Treaties is the third studio album by the American hard rock band Blue Öyster Cult, released in 1974. Secret Treaties is regarded by many fans and critics alike as Blue Öyster Cult's best album. The album spent 14 weeks in the US album charts, peaking at No. 53.[6] It was declared gold by the RIAA in 1992.[7] In 1975, a poll of critics of the British magazine Melody Maker voted Secret Treaties as the "Top Rock Album of All Time". In 2010, Rhapsody (online music service) called it one of the all-time best "proto-metal" albums.[8] The cover, with art by Ron Lesser, depicts the band standing beside and sitting on and besides a German Me262 fighter aircraft; this scene is inspired by the song of the same name. Many songs from this album found their way into BOC playlists over the following years, including "Career of Evil", "Subhuman", "Astronomy" and "Harvester of Eyes".
