月娘逃到外祖父家，在外婆的督导下，继承了娘惹的厨艺、女红，长成像她母亲一样娇俏的少女。战后外祖父一家逃难回来，月娘就像当年的母亲一样，被歧视、毒打、折磨，为了保护外婆，她忍辱负重。由于一次误打误撞，她结识了“身无分文”的小司机陈锡（戚玉武 饰），此后两人来往不断。原来陈锡出生名门，隐瞒身份与月娘交往，却被她的纯真、善良和坚强感动，对她一往情深。由于身份地位悬殊，各自的家庭不断施压，两人决定私奔，但命运却让他们一次又一次地错过……
