2013 special episode of Doctor Who

The main story arc of the series focused on the significance of the character of Clara, whom the Doctor had encountered twice before as Oswin in "Asylum of the Daleks" and as a governess in "The Snowmen". It also features the recurring appearance of the Doctor's enemy, The Great Intelligence.

The series is the first to star Peter Capaldi as the Twelfth Doctor and Jenna Coleman as his companion, Clara Oswald. Also playing a major recurring role in the series is Samuel Anderson as Danny Pink, Clara's boyfriend. The main story arc revolves around a mysterious woman called Missy (portrayed by Michelle Gomez), who is often seen welcoming people who have died throughout the series to the "Promised Land", a place that serves as an apparent afterlife to deceased characters.

Now that the Doctor and Clara have established a dynamic as a partnership of equals, they’re relishing the fun and thrills that all of space and time has to offer. Tangling with ghosts, Vikings and the ultimate evil of the Daleks, they embark on their biggest adventures yet. Missy is back to plague the Doctor once more, the Zygons inspire fear as they shape-shift into human clones, and a new arrival moves in cosmic ways.

special episode of Doctor Who

Clara Oswald gets into an argument with the TARDIS after the TARDIS plays a practical joke on her in the shower and then makes her bedroom disappear. After revealing to Clara that she is far from being the first girl the Doctor has "brought home", the TARDIS plays another trick on Clara that has her seeing double, and triple, and quadruple... Clara continues to be at odds with the TARDIS. (TV: The Rings of Akhaten, Hide) The TARDIS, in response to Clara's statement asking if the TARDIS is upset because the Doctor has brought a girl home for the night, is shown images of a number of past companions (in this case: Ace, Martha Jones, Nyssa, Peri Brown, Romana I and Romana II, Rose Tyler, Sarah Jane Smith and Amy Pond). Clara takes particular note of Amy's legs. The TARDIS previously gave a similar slide show to Amy herself, with Amy making a similar remark with regards to Leela. (TV: Meanwhile in the TARDIS) Ace and Nyssa are shown for the first time in the revived series. As Clara is unaware of past companions prior to the TARDIS revealing them to her, this story has to take place prior to the events of TV: The Name of the Doctor. Clara says that the TARDIS created a holographic leopard while she was in the bathroom. The TARDIS previously created a holographic voice interface of Clara to argue with Clara. (TV: Hide) Although several episodes in Series 7 indicate that Clara is not a full-time resident of the TARDIS, she does nonetheless have a bedroom aboard the TARDIS. (TV: The Crimson Horror, et al) Once again, the Doctor is nowhere to be found as his companion beds down for the night. (TV: Bad Night) As this story appears to take place over at least several nights, his absence is unexplained.

The Doctor and Clara each deliver a separate monologue summing up their thoughts on each other before the events of "The Name of the Doctor."
