——czarina @ milk magazine

My Little Airport / 维港音乐 genre: Pop

Human Again is the fifth studio album by Ingrid Michaelson. The album is expected to be released on January 30, 2012 on Cabin 24 Records. The first single from the album, "Ghost" was released on November 15, 2011.In a recent interview,[1] Ingrid spoke about the album, saying: "It's coming along really well. We were hoping to have everything done by now, and we're not at all done. I keep writing more songs, so that's kind of a good thing, because I keep creating new things, and that's what's halting the process, because we have to go in and record that song. It's been a long, arduous process, but the harder you work on something, the prouder you are of it." "I played a few of the songs for my father that we've been working on, and he asked me where are all the peppy songs were. Evidently, there aren't any peppy songs on this record. But that's OK, I'm not a little kid anymore. I love singing my little ukulele songs. But I feel like it's time to stand up and really sing. [This record] is fiercer and not as childlike. Not to dis my old work, but I feel like I've done the whole barefoot singer-songwriter thing" "'Parachute' was a lot poppier, kind of darker. The next record isn't going to sound like that, but I think in the way that 'Parachute' sort of pushes out the limits of what I've been doing in the past; it's stepping across a boundary. I think that's what I'm doing with the record. I don't think the record sounds like 'Parachute,' but I think it's a bit stronger. There are some similarities in that it's different from my previous work. I'm singing harder, I'm pushing more. Hopefully that will be evident." On Tuesday, November 15, Ingrid announced the tracklist and release date, as well as the album's first single, "Ghost," and unveiled the cover artwork.[2] The cover artwork was painted by Joe Sorren specifically for the album. She plans on promoting the album by going on tour in Spring 2012. She will also be performing live on the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.[3]

Greg Laswell genre: Folk
release date 2010-05-04 publisher: Vanguard Records
The act of making music can be extremely useful in life. If your heart has been broken, giving voice to those raw emotions can act as a salve to ease the pain. Greg Laswell knows this, because he did just that on 2006’s Through Toledo, surely one of the most intense breakup albums ever made. When you’ve finally reached the point where life is beginning to seem beautiful and exciting again, there’s no better way to celebrate it than by singing the song that greeted you, fully formed in your head, when you awoke that very morning, telling you everything is gonna be all right. That’s precisely what Laswell did with How the Day Sounds, a six-song EP released early this year, serving as a progress report on his revitalized state of being. Once you’re together enough to become aware of the other lives that are touching your own, you can then help those around you, just as you’ve helped yourself, with an anthem or a lullaby. This impulse is what motivated the creation of Three Flights From Alto Nido, the enigmatically yet aptly titled third volume of Laswell’s trilogy of heartbreak and redemption. Pointing out that “alto nido” translates from the Spanish as “high nest,” Laswell explains that “Three flights" implies that you’re on your way to a ‘high nest,’ even if you’re not quite there yet. “Whereas Through Toledo was intimate and autobiographical for the most part, the EP reflected the transitional time of coming out of it,” Laswell explains. “With this album, I wanted to do something really big sounding—a little bit bigger than I am, really. In a sense, the album was shaped around the fact that 2007 was a difficult and strange year for just about all of my friends and family members, and I wrote ‘Comes and Goes (In Waves’) as a kind of open letter to everyone that had had a hard time, reassuring them that everything’s gonna be OK. So I wanted to make the song big and sprawling and full of hope.” “This one’s for the lonely, the ones that seek and find/Only to be let down time after time,” the song begins, over a feathery acoustic guitar, on a slow build toward its widescreen climax. “This one’s for the torn-down, the experts at the fall, come on friends, get up now, you’re not alone at all.” As much as any, these four lines encapsulate the impulse behind the album. When asked about other key songs, Laswell points to “It’s Been a Year,” an exquisite midtempo piece burnished with strings and overflowing with humanity. “It achieved what I wanted to say very quickly,” he explains. “It wrote itself, really, as if it was already out there and I just needed to find it.” Another musical and emotional high point is “I’d Be Lying,” which documents a seemingly perfect relationship that falls victim to bad timing. Laswell’s lush arrangement plays against the bittersweet premise, as he stacks layer after layer of vocals, achieving outright grandeur in a stunning display of arrangement and production skills. “Even on the songs that seem sad at first listen,” he points out, “I wanted to convey an element of hope, to make people feel good when they hear it.” Reappearing from the EP, in newly mixed form, are the pivotal, life-(re)embracing “How the Day Sounds” and the propulsive, anthemic “Days Go On,” each of which remains as captivating and thematically key here as they were in the transitional context of the EP. “Those songs are full of hope, and the album really does wrap around them,” says Laswell. “They gave course to how the rest of the album was created. Laswell began writing this batch of songs in his Hollywood apartment between sessions for the EP, working in a garage studio located in Santa Ana, which he’d leased soon after moving from his hometown of San Diego. Although he’d decided to separate life and work when he moved, the act of creating the EP was inspiring him anew, and every night he’d work out a new idea in Garageband, cooking up a set of lo-fi but useful demos. When he took them into the studio and began adding elements, he realized that these songs called out for something more than he’d brought to any of his previous work. Rather than handling everything himself—writing arranging, playing and singing all the parts, producing, engineering and mixing—as he’d done since transitioning from a bandmember to a solo artist, Laswell opened up his creative process, enlisting guitarist Brandon Walters, who regularly joins him in his live performances. “Onstage we felt this chemistry, a musical relationship I wanted to bring into the studio,” Greg points out. “So the two of us went into this mad-scientist mode, tracking layer after layer. Brandon would hop on banjo, I’d grab an electric guitar, then add a piano, and it just kept growing.” When the recording was done, Laswell turned over another new leaf by calling on highly skilled mixer Greg Collins (U2, Eels, Cary Brothers). “These songs needed to be really big,” he says, “and pulling it off in the mix was just beyond my skill set. Greg made them even bigger; he pulls these songs up to a level I hadn’t even imagined. He’s just brilliant, and he’s added so much to this record.” Working with Walters and Collins united Laswell’s impulse to go outside himself on Three Flights From Alto Nido with the process of creating it. “That’s the way I approached this record from the beginning,” he says. I wanted to make it for everybody. Not just me, by myself, doing songs about me, but writing songs to other people and for other people. If people want to feel sad and sorry for themselves, they can listen to Through Toledo.” He punctuates this statement with a quick, rueful laugh. “If they want to feel better, hopefully, they can listen to this record.”

Elliott Smith genre: Folk
release date 2000-01-01 publisher: Dreamworks

release date 2004-09-07 publisher: Katie Herzig
Katie Herzig has fronted a nationally successful indie band from Boulder, CO, since she was a sophomore in college. The band, Newcomers Home, still grows strong, already selling in the teens of thousands of cds and steadily becoming a recognizable name in the band world (Check out ). So, this mid-twenties over-achieving, under-divafied artist has taken her untouched-by-Newcomers Home songs and made them clearly her own. "Really, making this album was just an indulgent outlet for my songs and ideas...often needed by those writing in a band. The project was very un-forced because I had so much material just waiting for an outlet." Already Herzig's cd has had national TV play on WB's "Smallville" and radio play on NPR playing stations. "Watch Them Fall," was co-produced with Newcomers Home's former bass player and favorite engineer/producer Chris Coleman. (See ). Herzig and Coleman play and sing everything that made it on the album. "Watch Them Fall" has taken a back seat to Katie's priority of being in the band, but has ended up taking a front seat in the cd players of many Newcomers Home fans as well as those who've never even heard of the band. Most recently, Herzig was chosen out of hundreds of applicants to be a finalist in a national songwriting showcase in the 2004 Planet Bluegrass Folk Festival, put on by The Telluride Bluegrass folks. Wondering who her influences are? "Well it's a big confusing collage of Shawn Colvin's guts and poetry, Patty's raw goodness, Enya's layerings of harmonies and texture, a smidge of Ani's guitar goddess punch, Norah's soft and tasty production, and my new fascination with Coldplay." It is what it is and it's luckily not a rip-off of anyone, as Herzig's style begs a definition of its own.

Rilo Kiley's most recent album, 2004's More Adventurous, prompted Elvis Costello to praise the best lyric writing that I've heard in many a day, Coldplay to invite the band on its 2005 arena tour and a plethora of critics to vote the disc onto annual best of lists. That album sold 175,000 while Jenny Lewis' solo record, 2006's Rabbit Fur Coat, sold 100,000. Now the gloriously decadent Under The Blacklight, the group's fourth album but first for Warner Bros., focuses even more intensely on what one critic has called lead singer-songwriter Jenny Lewis' tangle of indie pop, torch song and too-cool-for-school cynicism. With Under The Blacklight, Rilo Kiley is ready to shine.

More Adventurous is the third full-length album released by Los Angeles-based band Rilo Kiley. The album, released on August 17, 2004, marks a significant change in the band's sound with the goal of being "more adventurous" than their previous music. The effort paid off by increasing the group's audience and garnering critical praise; noted rock critic Robert Christgau, initially naming the album the fifth best release of 2004, included it in his recap of the greatest albums of the 2000-2009 decade, placing it at the twenty-fourth spot.

Katie Herzig
release date 2009-02-17 publisher: Marion-Lorraine Records
In 2006, after eight years of fronting the critically acclaimed Colorado-based band, Newcomers Home, and releasing her first solo record, Watch Them Fall, as a side project—singer/songwriter Katie Herzig retreated to the solitude of her bedroom studio. There, she single-handedly recorded and produced Weightless, a tour-de-force of innovative sonics and songwriting whose tracks have been prominently featured on NPR, KCRW’s Morning Becomes Eclectic, E.R., Smallville, and, most recently, on two episodes of television’s highest-rated drama, Grey’s Anatomy. Following the release of Weightless, Herzig left Colorado for Nashville and immediately started to catch the attention of other artists. Her song “Heaven’s My Home” received a 2007 Grammy nomination for best country performance by The Duhks. She was also invited to open shows for The Fray and join PASTE Magazine and American Songwriter Magazine sponsored tours. Performing Songwriter Magazine wrote, “Katie Herzig possesses gravity-defying powers on her latest release, balancing heavy and mournful lyrics with light pop melodies that bounce and float into the stratosphere.” PASTE Magazine’s Jason Killingsworth said, “Katie Herzig has a whimsical side that I love. Her music doesn’t take itself too seriously, and the lyrics always [have] a sharp emotional edge to them. I’m a huge fan.” And now, on May 13, 2008, Katie Herzig’s fans can expect her most adventurous and satisfying album yet: Apple Tree. While Apple Tree is every bit as melodic and emotionally incisive as Herzig’s previous records, it is nonetheless a bold and assertive step forward. According to Herzig, “Weightless was very much a do-it-yourself, homemade project, but the recording of Apple Tree became very collaborative and pushed me to places, performance and production- wise, that I might not have gone on my own.” Working as her own producer, Herzig teamed up with Nashville multi-instrumentalist and producer Cason Cooley (The Normals, Derek Webb) for five tracks—as well as with two members of The Fray team, producer Aaron Johnson and guitarist David Welsh on the track ‘Hologram.’ Herzig: “The song ‘Hologram’ was actually written partly in response to a conversation I’d had with Aaron, who said he missed how I used to belt when I sang with the band. So it felt appropriate to record that song with him.” Though Herzig is the sole author of most of Apple Tree, two of the songs (‘I Will Follow’ and ‘I Want To Belong To You’) were co-written with well-known songwriter Kim Richey. “I’ve learned so much writing with Kim,” Herzig says. “Especially about patience. Allowing the songs to take the time they need to develop, rather than rushing to finish them and ultimately settling.” Patience is also a trademark of producer Cason Cooley’s contribution to Apple Tree. “I’m always in such a hurry to get my ideas recorded,” Herzig admits, “but Cason helped slow me down. He is an explorer with an incredible ear for melodies. He also helped hand-pick many of the musicians we asked to play on the record.” Nashville recording artists Sandra McCracken and Ruby Amanfu also lent their voices to a few songs on the project. As on Weightless, Herzig again worked side-by-side with Grammy winner Gary Paczosa (Alison Krauss, John Prine), who mixed the album, helping to massage two years’ worth of songs and the work of three producers into a cohesive artistic statement. The result is Apple Tree: a spellbinding, uniquely immersive listening experience that deftly manages to be at once playful and impassioned—challenging and comfortable—intimate and epic. Which is exactly what listeners have come to expect from Katie Herzig.

Lenka genre: Pop
release date 2008-09-23 publisher: Epic
In Sydney, Australia, Lenka was a teen actress who trained with Cate Blanchett, thereafter landing leading roles on stage, television and indie films. A self-described 'punk-ass art school student' and vocalist/keyboardist for acclaimed indie Electronic/ambient outfit Decoder Ring. She has flung herself into two new worlds simultaneously: she's moved to California and become a solo artist. Whether channelling our long-repressed terrors ('Trouble') or long-lost innocence ('We Will Not Grow Old'), her music evokes primal emotions, unblemished by pretense or cynicism and unashamed of cracking a smile occasionally. Lenka's fresh sensibility extends to every element of her music, as the whimsical, paper art, stoimated videos she creates.'It's a mood-enhancer,' she says of her record, 'I don't like it when people are depressed. I want to cheer them up.'
