《英语史》适宜用作高校英语专业高年级或研究生一年级课程“英语史”的教材。全书共分两个部分：第一部分共八章，叙述英语的来源和演变过程，第二部分主要包括早期英语读本，共收十七篇选文，分别说明古英语、中古英语的早期现代英语的特点。本课程为学期课程，重点为早期英语。与此课程相衔接的课程叫做“英语的结构”，也是一门学期课程，它的重点是现代和当代英语。这样的分工是必要的，因为关于早期英语的知识通常容易被忽视，因此一个专门课程来提供这方面的知识。而这方面的知识是一切深入学习英语和英国文学的学生都十分需要的。《英语史》作者在北京大学开设“英语史”课程共有四次的经验。根据学生的反映，他们认为颇有收获，因为他们学了这门课程之后，大都能借助词典和注释阅读古英语散文和乔叟、莎士比亚的作品了。另外，对于专门研究英语语音、语法、词汇的学生来说，这门课也使他们初步学会了如何从历史发展的演变角度来分析语言现象。
