a review of 星际迷航:发现号衍生剧
Tries to accordion what seems to have been originally conceived as a season-long story arc for Michelle Yeoh's former Terran Emperor Georgiou into a bothersomely cacophonous, choppily-edited 90-minute TV movie. It neither partakes of the adventurousness of Discovery nor the back-to-basics Trek-ness of Strange New Worlds, and instead imagines the shadowy Starfleet covert-ops organization as a wild-and-wooly team of goofballs and misfit toys a la Guardians of the Galaxy (it wishes) or Suicide Squad (closer to the mark, sadly) who blunder through their missions with all the subtlety of the late Chris Farley belly-flopping through a coffee table. There's a couple of actors I enjoy in this; Besides Yeoh, there's also Hannibal's Kacey Rohl, Detroiters costar Sam Richardson. Sadly, they're given basically nothing to work with and end up mostly playing second fiddle to a gaggle of characters whose personalities seem built around jabbering at each other in loud annoying accents and being generally unlikeable. As always, Star Trek contains multitudes, both good and bad. And sometimes it's fun to rewatch some of the bad ones just to remind myself as a fan that it's not all winners. But this one just left me with a throbbing headache.
