Broken Flowers - Review
About 26 minutes into this movie, Jeffrey Wright's overzealous suburban dad/wannabe-detective character hands Bill Murray a map, some hotel/rental car reservations, and a mix CD of traveling music. It's the most direct way that I've ever seen a film grab its main character by the collar and say: Drop everything bud, you're in a frickin' road movie now. And I like how it subverts the standard road movie structure by having it mostly be Murray exploring his own life by seeing the paths not taken, and ultimately failing in his fuzzily defined objective, while also questioning the very impulses that put him on the road in the first place. It'll likely be a frustrating movie for some, but I enjoyed the ride.
