It worked for me up to a point? It was pretty strong for the whole first hour, with the visual storytelling being good enough to carry me through some of the clunkier bits, and it's that whole section where the characters are discovering the rules of their predicament and struggling to cope with them where the movie is really its strongest. But Shyamalan could have cut the entire last 10-15 minutes and lost absolutely nothing central to the themes of the movie. That chunk of the movie has at least three places where he could have ended it, but instead it just keeps going for no real reason other than to spell out things the audience could have put together for themselves.
