在一部着重刻画内心挣扎的动漫中，金木研可以说是动漫史上最矫揉造作的主角。尽管剧情反复表现他难以接受自己新的喰种身份，使他看起来像是个碇真嗣般孤独敏感的少年，但他的性格相当扁平，时刻不停的抱怨令人厌烦，其性格塑造更像是服务于设定，为了最大程度地给自身行为寻找借口，而非让人产生亲近感。之后，他的性格在一集之内发生了 180 度调转，从一个爱哭鬼瞬间变得冷酷无情。我只觉得，那些还在缓慢建立自我认同的的中二少年们，最喜爱这类亦正亦邪的极端表达。他们所谓的在善恶间徘徊，指的是一面要肩负比他人更宏大、更具道德感的使命，一面又要装模做样地摆出不被理解的样子，刻意追求一种看似深刻的独特感。
