finished watching Coonskin 🌕🌕🌕🌗🌑
In depicting a parody of racism in America, Ralph Bakshi creates in Coonskin an enjoyably awkward and uncomfortable watch.
Right from the start of the film, one is introduced to characters designed after racist caricatures, immediately followed by an introduction song where a certain slur is especially present, leaving the viewer wondering what in God's name they've gotten themselves into.
However, as the film goes on, one realises that rather than the film being a racist work, the film uses caricatures, stereotypes, slurs, and more in ways that truly showcase the absurdity of racist tropes, the effects racism has on society, the poor treatment America has given black people both historically and in the present day, and more.
While I will say I find the film's depiction of queer people is a tad questionable, Coonskin's social commentary is one that is effective, while also not for the faint of heart.
