Solid, but not as good as the first

Despite the same number of anthology segments and a similar runtime, V/H/S 2 felt slightly disappointing and slow compared to the first installment. The first segment, involving a guy whose experimental ocular implant allows him to see ghosts, has potential but doesn't fully exploit its interesting premise. The second segment is a straight-up zombie story. It's competently executed and the first-person devouring of guts is slightly novel, but Romero-style zombies feels a little prosaic for the series. The third segment, about journalists investigating a cult in Indonesia, feels a bit more fresh, but overly long. The demon that appears at the climax looks a little silly, but I give the crew credit for trying. The final story, "Slumber Party Alien Abduction," is the best of the bunch. It can be argued that aliens are just as played out as zombies, but I have a soft spot for found footage UFO stuff, the aliens look good, and the abduction sequences are genuinely creepy. Worth watching for fans of found footage horror, but I still prefer the first one.
