Sharknado (2013)

Even among the people who actively enjoy bad movies, the Sharknado series has received a lot of criticism for deliberately trying to be bad as it's progressed. Each successive sequel has only gotten more self-aware, over-the-top, and intentionally ridiculous/stupid all for the sake of keeping people who don't typically like shlock films watching out of morbid curiosity and satisfying those who genuinely enjoy the series for it's ironic terribleness. Now I personally love these movies, but I guess I can kind of understand why certain aficionados of awful cinema might view them with disdain. At least a little bit. I don't think that same hate should be applied to this one though. As it is genuinely an accidental trashterpiece. It just so happened to blow up to insane proportions. Bad acting, silly dialog, actors that have seen better days, and just a lot of dumb moments. Sharknado has just about everything you would expect from a Syfy original movie. Unlike a lot Asylum productions however, it doesn't seem like it's actively trying to be absurd. This a film company that is known for often totally embracing and reveling in their own stupidity (as can be seen in the later Sharknado films), but every now and then they'll cut the crap and create something that has some genuine effort behind it to go alongside whatever asinine premise was cooked up. This is one such example. The movie is completely illogical. You'll see fully grown great white sharks attack people in ankle deep water and with shots that always try to make it look like the flooding is much deeper than it actually is. As terrible as the directing and writing are the whole thing is just so charming. It's got that "so bad, it's good" appeal and I always have a lot fun watching it. Especially with other people as it's easy to trade jokes back-and-forth about what's happening onscreen, kind of like with "The Room." Only you won't be laughing at a (beloved) work of absolute ineptitude. Sharknado is the kind of movie that can be appreciated by those who truly enjoy and have a passion for bad cinema.
