Sharknado 5: Global Swarming (2017)Probably the most fun Sharknado since the first one. It doesn't burden itself with too much exposition, once again favors shark kills over tornado puns, and brings Nova back. Global Swarming is the first of the sequels to not try and one-up the lunacy of it's predecessors. Something that would have been very hard to do after the insanity that was The 4th Awakens. It's craziness feels much more natural as a result. The tone is also much different than any of the previous installments. It moves away from the sci-fi elements so heavily introduced in the previous two movies and plays out like a globetrotting adventure flick. Mystical elements are introduced in an effort to provide an origin for the sharknados and they make no sense at all. The plotting it just as illogical as all the others, but this time I didn't really know what was causing all the weird stuff to happen in the first place. In the rest of the series there was some reasoning given to the viewers for everything happening onscreen, backwards and nonsensical though it may have been. I kind of can't complain too much about this though (partially because this is freaking Sharknado). While things are little harder to follow, Global Swarming also doesn't have any of the downtime of it's predecessors. The fact that it doesn't waste any time explaining itself means that we get more silly deaths, hilarious one-liners, cameos, and pop culture parodies. Films like Indiana Jones and Back to the Future get lovingly spoofed in certain sequences of the film. There's always something happening. This may not be Sharknado at it's most absurd or ridiculous, but it is the series at it's most energetic and fast-paced so far. Hopefully The Last Sharknado will keep the momentum going, because I loved how much more lively this one was compared to what came before it.
