Adam Sandler: 100% Fresh (2018)I'm just going to go ahead and admit that I'm being a little biased with this rating. I love Adam Sandler. Always have and always will. Even today when his movies have taken a noticeable drop in quality I'm still there faithfully watching every one and chuckling like a madman. The Netflix stuff, Pixels, Jack and Jill, all of it. Think of me what you will. Setting aside my questionable taste in comedy though, this is still a genuinely funny standup special. Perhaps standup isn't quite the right word. More like a concert as Sandler spends most of 100% Fresh performing original songs. I love the way it regularly changes the venue as he goes through the material. We get to see each stage Sandler entertained on. On top of just making it more visually exciting, we are also probably getting to see the best take for every joke as a result. This is a true return to the comedian's glory days. Reminiscent of when he delighted us on SNL. At over an hour in length I kept expecting the whole thing to overstay it's welcome and get old, but that never happened. I haven't laughed this hard in a while. Sandler almost went too far near the end with some overly raunchy, vulgar material that just about lost me. Luckily, that kind of stuff was brief allowing the Sand-man to slip in some more sentimental content. The special concludes with a tribute to the late Chris Farley and a love song dedicated to Mrs. Sandler. Both very sweet, but perhaps should have been introduced with a little more ceremony. It's a little jarring to hear the topic change from wife sex to singing about a departed friend without any warning. Could have been handled a little better. I loved every second of this though. I guffawed until it hurt and then did some more. The man can still make the weirdest material hilarious like nobody else can and his music is as clever as it's always been. Now, my rating is reflective of my bias, but if you've ever considered yourself a Sandler fan you owe it to yourself to check this out. He's performing in a way he hasn't in years. Somehow managing to be at the top of his game again despite it looking like he was quickly running out of steam.
