The Gate (1987)

This was a study of the life of young people in the 1980s whose life stresses are represented by demonic homunculi pouring out of a chance opening in the backyard. Bereft of meaningful parental involvement their preoccupations grow to overwhelming proportions which threaten to snuff out not only the individual kid but everyone they care for. On another level, this is your basic movie with effects-driven scares and semi-likeable kid actors doing their best to inject emotion into a script that doesn't give them a real lot to work with. There are distressing scenes involving the family dog but they get unwound later on, so no reason for concern. There is a bit of foreshadowing but not surrounding the one gun that shows up along the way.
